To quote an Ancient Chinese Proverb: "Sometimes to
scare the monkey, you must kill a chicken".
:)
My experience in Gothic has been that the Bishops
and Knights have DIFFERENT merits depending on
the stage of the game and which side of the board
they start! There are strict-thinking 8x8
chessplayers out there who would call my 10x8
synopsis heresy, but look at some interesting tidbits:
* The Queen's Bishop can issue a deadly flank check
(offensive merit > King Bishop) and the King's Bishop
is often needed to defend the potenitally weak h3/i2
area of the board (more of a defensive task.)
Example: Look at what happened to Aaron in his first
game; he got nabbed by a flank bishop move,
pinning his Chancellor to the King.
A common misplay by white is:
1. e4 b6 2. d4 Ba6+! and a major piece is lost
already since nothing else can intervene and block
the check!
For this reason, I believe the Queen's Bishop is more
of an asset in the opening stage of the game.
* The Queen's Knight is usually deployed lastly in
the opening, and tends to not factor into tactical
exchanges for most of the game. For this reason, I
tend to think of it as being "expendable" :) If I can
get the QN into play early, I will do so.
* Two pawns are not enough shelter for a King
against three Bishops!
In my game with Cal, I got 2 pawns for the QN, plus
strong attacking prospects. So, as the other pieces
on my side gain activity, I would think the QN would
tend to "get in the way", so I am better off without
it.
Just my thoughts.

Message: This is a very interesting chess-variant! I have never played it, but it looks extremely challenging. Also I think Fischer random chess looks like fun, since it bypasses all opening-book theory right from move 1.
no doubt this variant of chess mus be even more difficult than normal chess, since there are more files, more pawns, more pieces, and even more types of pieces! -Good Job!

Message: Hi Kingslinger,
Gothic Chess is more fun (in my opinion) because of
the new pieces and the fact that it is not too much
different from regular chess. Other variants really
get crazy, this one is rather tame and logically
motivated.
Stop by:

Message: Fooled you !! I am not going for a simple multi move kingside castling !! I am going for a mega move Queenside castling instead !!!
I wasn't too sure about Ki1, my Kingside defences are fairly well shot to pieces and it didn't look too attractive an option to tuck him away there behind the remains of my defences. My King will lead by example and stand in the open and fight !! Who'd be a King.. huh !

Of course ...Cg3+ can lead to a deadly Chancellor's
Vortex. It is amazing how often this theme arises in
Gothic Chess. In such a position the Chancellor
checks while blocking his own Bishop. Sometimes the
king can *only* move to the square where the
Bishop check is revealed, so the Chancellor gets a
"free move" and usually swipes material in the
process. Sometimes the enemy king is so
constrained it can only return to where it all started,
allowing the Chancellor to come back and check,
setting up the revealed Bishop check again. In such
a position, the Chancellor can remove every piece
that is a sliding Rook move away, or a Knight move
away.
Since you have f2 as a flight resource, this is not a
Chancellor's Vortex. But...I think the pawn push here
complicates the position enough :)

Message: As I am a novice at this game I am finding it very instructional to be playing such a complete Master of the game as yourself. I am beginning to learn from you the intricasies and techniques required by this game, the "Chancellor Vortex" is a fascinating concept, thanks for explaining it so well. No doubt you have many other "tricks up your sleeve" !
I will further "muddy the waters" by moving pawn to f4. You don't mind, do you, if my King takes refuge behind YOUR pawn shield as my shield is broken........
:)
Don't forget I will be away for a few days and will not be able to make my next move until the middle of next week.
Kind regards,

Message: How about keeping your game with Cal here? You have been commenting on each move and it has been quite insightful to learn the strategies and way of thinking when playing this interesting variant of chess. If you move to the graphical board, we will lose out on that!
Since the game is already up to move 12, it would be nice to see you guys finish it here in the forums...
Just my 2 cents...

Message: Ok Zucan, I can continue a game or two here to
keep you updated. I am curious, are you viewing the
graphics at the site? How are you following the
game? Once you go to BrainKing.com you have the
ability to see anyone's games in progress, similar to
here. I had chatted with Mike a while back about a
Gothic feature, but his "to do" list was quite long
and a new variant was not a high priority (and
rightly so.) But now it seems there is more of a
demand for this than even I had imagined. I sold
about 14 Gothic Chess sets since Monday, to 4
different countries!
I plan on annotating some games on the website in
the near future. I am also pursuing adding Gothic
Chess to the MindSport Olympiad.
Your feedback was appreciated.

Good luck in your Tournament.

Thanks for the game. I enjoyed that. You have now sparked my interest in Gothic Chess and I have started another Gothic Chess match (this time not against the world's best player.....huge sigh of relief !!)

But remember, just like Arnie...."I will be back !!"
Good luck in the International Challenge, I will certainly follow the games with interest.
By the way, the help files along the left hand side of the website don't seem to be working, I just see "abcdefg" when I try to read the help files. Also, the only game visible seems to be your won game, nothing happens when I try to view the other games......minor bugs ?
