Subject: Knight's Fianchetto Opening?
Message: I've noticed some games online with this opening. This is the first time I've seen it. And it's so funny-looking! But totally playable, I think.
it goes: 1.e4,g6 2.d4,Nf6 3.e5,Nh5 4.g4 (as a possible move), Ng7
It looks cool eh? I know some ideas for black already, but I was wondering if anyone could post some analysis, main lines, alternative white moves, whatever, etc....
Thanks a lot. :)

Message: Black wastes 3 tempi with the N,and ends up putting it on a square that should be reserved for the f8 Bishop(else why play g6?). Call me an old-fashioned purist, but the whole idea of the opening is rapid development.

Message: That doesn't seem to be true any more. You might want to look at John Watson's two books discussing modern chess strategy.
I am with you though. Some of these new ideas make me queasy and in my gut I think they will be shown to be in error but it will take a better player than me to show it.

Message: 5.Bh7 looks like a good continuation for White. This move makes it impossible for Black to develop his kingside pieces without giving up castling.

Message: Concentrate on the center. Move each piece once. It is a typical novice GameKnot opening.

Message: After 1.e4,g6 2.d4,Nf6 3.e5,Nh5 4.g4 Ng7, 5.Bh6 I would play 5...d6. White should reinforce g4 with 6.h3, then when Black captures on e5 resulting in a trading of queens it must lead to at least equality. with the White squared bishop to d7, the knight to c6 and 0-0-0 whites Kingside looks awfully messy and Black looks ready to counterpunch in the center.

Message: More enterprising for White then is 6.Bc4 dxe5 7.Qf3, with a view to castling queenside.

9/21/2003 10:32:53 [ report this post ] | Hyper-modern spirit
Message: It seems that this eccentric defense follows the main idea of the hypermodern style: it invites white to weak his pawn structure. After 5. Bh6, I agree with halfpast_yellow, 5. ... d6 or also 5. ... d5 are strong moves. If 6. Bc4 dxe5 7. Qf3 I think that black can easily face the attack with 7. ... Ne6.
I would play instead of 4. g4, 4. Nf3 or 4. Be2 (which threatens Bxh5 with the distruption of the kindside). After 1. e4 g6 2. d4 Nf6 3. e5 Nh5 white is better (his knight in h5 is ridiculous), why accept the provocation of black?
