Subject: Opening analysis

Message:
Which opening gives white more advantage in terms of score (forget development and position) after the last book move ??
Answer implies some software analysis but the result should be interesting.
I found the English Symmetrical but it was just a superficial work.
Bye.

score?

Message:
By score do you mean material score? Because I'd assume there is no opening that you can force that actually gives you an advantage in material. Or do you mean in the score a computer program would give it?

Cause

Message:
I mean non-forced I would guess the Damniano defense would give you the biggest material advantage.. that's just a joke opener e4 e5 Nf3 f6 Nxe5 fxe5 Qh4+ then white can block with pawn and lose rook or move king and get mated in several moves.. so if he blocks with pawn then that's a pretty nice material net in that opening.

andi f you mean

Message:
and if you mean winning percentage:

according to www.chessgames.com

the main variation of french defense seemed to have the highest winning percentages for white.. always around 40 percent or a little more (with about 30+ percent of draws)

1. Na3 is best with 100% wins for white.
1. a4 is worst with 83% wins for black.

well

Message:
I was sticking to openings that had thousands of games in the database.. but yeah there were a bunch of unorthodox openings that only had a few games and a 100% score for one side or the other. I think grob was 100% for white..

That question could be the basis of a Doctoral thesis in statistics. Chess is not checkers. There is on one opeining that could possibly answer that question, or we all would be playing it.

E4 is the highest score, hence the most common opening and as a GM once said ( forget which now ) ...

'E4, best by test'

Opening as white

Message:
Fischer liked to open with 1.e4 and that quote is usually attributed to him if I remember correctly..
Queens Gambit and English also score well for white, though there is only so much that can be read into statistics as I think has been said...

Best by test

Message:
Yes, Fischer wrote that in the annotation to one of the games in "My 60 memorable games".

You are so right! I have a first edition copy of that book with his name spelled wrong on the binding! :o) Hans Berliner argues that 1.d4 is best in his book "The system".

Just wanted to throw in a contraversial opening.... e3... how bad do people here rate this?... and why?...is it really so bad?...

I always use it, and it seems to work for me?... just curious why it gets such a bad reputation.

Spurtus.

Anything works on inferior players

Message:
1.Nh3 will also work. 1.e3 wastes a tempo, does not attack the center strong, and gives black a slight advantage. I would not play it against strong players.

I played 1. e3 in OTB chess and have beaten many near masters using it! Where I live I rarely get an oppotunity to play masters.
My specific method was to transpose to either an English or a Bird on my second move avoiding the From's gambit.
