Subject: GM WGM Judith Polgar Question

Message:
I've seen many articles about Judith Polgar. Sometimes she's refered to as GM other times GM/WGM and sometimes just WGM. I know she became GM in 1991. I was just wondering by doing that did she automatically get the WGM title? or did she get that at some later date? or does she even officially hold the WGM title?
Any help on this is appreciated. Thanx

She Can If She Wants To!

Message:
Unless they've changed it in the past 5+ years when I've been inactive, the system allows women who gain the IM title to be considered WGM and those who gain the FM title to be WIM for all relevant purposes. You might ask WIM Alexey Root (wimroot here on GK) if you really need to know . . . In generally, players such as the Polgar sisters who went directly for the "open" titles tend to use them rather than the others because they're more prestigious.

I don't think Judit plays in women's tournaments. Therefore she hasn't earned any female-only titles such as WGM. However, as fmgaijin said, she may have acquired the WGM title automatically.

Excuse me for feeling highly critical of segregating the sexes in Chess. While it may be the case that there is currently a male/female acheivement gap in Chess, that has everything to do with social context and likely little to do with biology. Provided that, segregation of the sexes in Chess can only worsen the problem by reinforcing our diminshed expectations of women's chess play.

I agree

Message:
I agree completely. I think that is the reason Judit Polgar refuses to play in women's events.

I also agree

Message:
and I think all the 3 Polar sisters prove the point, but I think the seperation of gender was to get more women involved in the male dominated chess world.

I think

Message:
Judit Polgar would feel insulted if someone described her as a WGM.

The new breed of women/girl players fight it out with the men and never go near Women's Tournaments, witness the efforts of 14 year old Kateryna Lahno. She has just played in the main Tournament at Hastings and is now fighting it out at Corus...
