Subject: Interesting positions
Message: Once I came up for this, when I couldn't get sleep: I had chessboard near my bed, I started to put pieces randomly on the board and started to make positions, where all pieces were used and none of the pieces threatens any of the opposite piece(s).
I spent many hours then tweaking the position for more strict rules and finally came up for these rules:
1.All pieces must be used
2.None of the pieces are threatening directly any of the oppsite pieces
3.Position must be legally possible (reachable on normal chess rules), so all the pawns must be on their own line, and always in front of opposite pawn, and no pawns on 1st or 8th rank. Both sides must have bishops on white and black squares.
4.At least 4 pieces per side must be on opposite half of the board
5.No piece can move without position being so that any piece threatens opposite piece (that's putting own piece on en prise, or threatens to capture enemy piece)
A piece cannot be placed on the squares of the opposite king movement range, even if the piece is itself supported by another friendly piece.
En passant doesn't occur.
6.Both sides are threatening mate in 1. There may be many checking moves, but only one move must be the mating move.
so finally I had this position on my board:
White:
Pawns a4, b3, c6, d2, e4, f5, g3, h4
Knights e7, f8
Bishops a1, a2
Rooks a3, b2
Queen h1
King g1
Black:
Pawns a5, b6, c7, d3, e5, f6, g7, h5
Knights e1, g4
Bishops a7, e2
Rooks a8, h6
Queen a6
King b8
I have made few other positions too, which are prettier, but they have one flaw, bishop in impossible square (like: black bishop on d8 and black pawns on c7 and e7)
Try yourself making these kind of positions, but be warned, it may take your sanity, since even though you have gotten 31 pieces correctly placed, it may be impossible to place the last piece on the board, and _then_ you must alter the position a little, and then little more, and then finally you may have to adjust most of the pieces again, and it is pain.

Message: If it makes you feel any better, I think this sounds like fun. Unfortunately I would have to cut my work hours by half and use my remaining money to hire a nanny and maid if I wanted the time to do it!! Take it easy.

Message: have an empty chessboard, then take randomly a piece and put it on the a1 (if a pawn, then a2) and then keep putting random pieces systemately on the board..
