Message: I believe there is a "Pocket Fritz" chess program for the Palm Pilot, but I don't know if there are any actual dedicated handheld devices for chess only...

not sure about a stand alone handheld, though. You can get a basic PDA for reasonable prices these days - so it may be worth it to get a PDA and a chess program. Then you could copy games back and forth with your PC easily.

Message: chess tiger on the pda would do all of the above.

Message: Will run on a PDA with Microsoft Windows CE 3.0. I find it very useful for analysing games quickly. It's not as "in depth" as the full blown Fritz programs, but it'll point out your failings pretty quickly!
There are a number of dedicated handheld chess computers on the market. Try www.chesscenter.com - they have several.

2/24/2004 08:26:03 [ report this post ] | Pocketchess Delux on Palm
Message: I think this program is outstanding for chess games review, but somehow it is not recommended that often.
I tried Chess Tiger, Chessmaster on Palm also. Chess Tiger is considered as the strongest program, but it is not friendly for reviewing your games played in GK. Very clumsy process. Chessmaster is kind of joke, IMHO. It has better graphic and characters to play against, but very sluggish start on palm. The slowest program I've ever seen to start on palm.
Pocketchess is not so strong or beautiful, but works very well for your own games analysis. I can download my games as pgn from GK. Load it to Pocketchess desktop companion program (free with Pocketchess), hotsync it and my games are in palm. Very simple steps. No cut and paste. Then I can review each game from palm, analyze, add some notes for a move, add variations and store it to a database. No program but Pocketchess can do this easily. As it is palm, don't expect it will perform like Fritz on Pentium 4.
Sometimes, I run Blunder Check using Fritz and save it to pgn text format, then import to palm. In that way, I can view the suggested moves. Good reading material in the subway. I use it also to follow the magazine article, just to see the moves one by one.
It works fine on my cheap (it was not that cheap, *sigh*, but it became so) black and white Visor, which I'm using for many other small tasks.

Message: What cost are you looking at for a really cheap PDA that will play a good chess engine with an editable database etc.
I use chessmaster on the gamebody on my GBA, its not great but it is OK.
Thanks,
