Subject: Where can i find some info on chess openings

Message:
I'm looking for some advice on the white side of the advanced caro, where white plays e5 Nc3 then throws his pawns on the kingside, im looking for some place on the net where i can find some advice on how to play this opening.
Also on a different note, just wandering if the winner of GK tournaments get any sort of prize?
thanks for your time

You can purchase software on advanced C-K. I have never used the software, just ran across this site once and figured they have software for advanced C-K, which they do.

No prizes for tournaments.

yeah i was hoping for free information
and about the tournaments a good idea would be a years membership to the winner? ICC does this I think.

Info on chess openings

Message:
gibo: You might want to take a look at www.chessgames.com/perl/explorer. You will find some common lines there, but you won't get any other evaluation of lines than winning percentages in a database. Winning percentages will not tell the whole story behind a line.
Winning percentages doesn't tell you anything about player strength, or about recent developments for this opening.

In the meantime, the most important thing to know is that you get a "?!" if you play the g4 advance before Black has played Bf5 and e6. For example:

1 e4 c6 2 d4 d5 3 e5 Bf5 4 Nc3 Qb6 g4?! Bd7!

...and now ask yourself what White's g pawn is doing on g4!

4 Nc3 leads to the most heavily theoretical lines in the whole Caro Kann, so good luck learning them!

chessgames.com is a good site.. no doubt used by many when playing here... I dont use it for my games though because I wont learn so well... and I recommend keeping clean!! Myself, I feel I need I need to get better at openings ... and I find that making mistakes is the most valuable lesson you can get...you dont forget those bad games!,,, because it hurts so bad to lose :o( !

NiC has a pretty good suggestion

In the Caro-Kahn Advance variation, there is an articol on the move 4.Be3 (after 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 Bf5). It's somewhat interesting and it let's you avoid learning tomes of theory on the over-agressive 4.Nc3, while retaining a chance on obtaining an edge.
