Subject: World Champion?
Message: I thought Kramnnik was world champion after winning it from Kasparov in 2000.
However, I've just bought a book called "play the French 3.Nd2" and there's a game in there that claims Anand became world Champion after beating Shirov in 2000?
I'm a bit confused can anyone shed any light on this matter?
Thanks.

3/15/2004 06:21:42 [ report this post ] | Yet Another Claim ...
Message: I didn't know about this, since it was during my break from Chess. But I"ve also heard the claim that RJF was/is the true World Chess Champion. Believe it was Bobby Fischer said that.
...However, truth of the matter is; let me be the first to announce it; in my opinion the True Champion is right here among us. The righteous World Chess Champ is GK's own NM "Drexel". Because he defeated me after I defeated FM Blankenau, who beat "Hitech", which won vs GM Lautier, who defeated Kasparov. And also, he is my friend, and a nice guy. So I think he is entitled to the crown.
Being also, simply too modest to claim his title, I stake the claim for him. And ask all GK players to lend their support to him as the GK World Chess Champion. [8-D

Message: Aside from all of us who can claim "6 Degrees [or less] of Separation World Champion status like drexel, and "retired" champions like Fischer, those who can currently put SOME claim the World Champion title are Kramnik (who defeated Kasparov but is supposed to defend vs. Leko), Kasparov (the highest-rated player), and the current holder of the FIDE World Title (still Ponomariov, I suppose, since the 2003 FIDE WC tournament did not take place to my knowledge, but FIDE sort of abandoned him after he did not sign the contract to play in a unification series vs. Kasparov).

Message: I know it may be hard for some to realize, but it is indeed Kramnik who is the World Champion. He beat Kasparov in a match for the title back in 2000. Even though Kasparov broke with FIDE, he was still considered the champion. Now because Kramnik beat him, he should be considered the champ.
As far as the No.1 rating spot goes, I read somewhere that when the new list comes out, it will be Kramnik who will be no. 1, but I'm not sure.
Ponamariov is simply afraid to play Kasparov and shouldn't even be counted. After Kasparov's perfomance at Linares, you gotta wonder about him. I certainly do. Maybe he's not the man anymore. Only time and some matches will tell.
Regards,
Jeff

Message: the last true world champion is Garry Kasparov IMHO.
He won it by the formula that the World Championship has always been decided, under FIDE.
current FIDE-World Championship is merely a joke, and Kasparov-Kramnik match were unofficial. That's why they are trying to have an unification for undisputed world champion, suggested by Yasser Seirawan. But alas... I asked Mr. Seirawan about it (in a chess site, where he visits often) and he said that it will not happen, because FIDE is not really interested about it or it is processing too slowly.

Message: , In your 1st paragraph, we could substitute "RJF" for Karparov and "No One" for Kramnik, & it would also be true ! And add to it.....{Then he successfully defended the title in the return match traditionally granted to deposed former champions, which for some reason FIDE sought to deny him }.
Still, mostly agree with you, Kasparov, & now his nemesis Kramnik, held best WC claims in their times. Just saying it does not seem to be indisputable. Two big objections I'd have to a Fischer claim:
.....
[not failing to meet Karpov; many WC's have quibbled, demanded, & avoided much more than RJF was allowed, yet retained their titles. It is almost a "Right" of prior WC's. & some GM's say FIDE's never been 'pure enough' to have stripped RJF's title anymoreso than tried vs Kasparov's? ]
......
Objection #1: the time frame. That RJF essentially 'let it go' too long w/o seriously attempting recovery...Such as starting his Own world Chess assoc. ala Kasparov. And #2, recall RJF sent a relinquishment letter(or 2,or 3 ?) to FIDE, Campomanes, or someone (ouch) ?! Is hard to recall Which was When, about RJF's 'GTH' letters, without look'n it up. Perhaps you only get to walk out on your WC match/title so many times before they say "OK"?
.......
Believe a crushing match vs Karpov would have given RJF highest Elo ever. But can not doubt, however high that Elo, it would have been successfully targeted to top, by the new Champs Nat'l Fed. [& that's not to say I disbelieve either K was in fact the strongest Player in the world in their own time. IMO each was.]
.......
But IMO Highest Elo is not a good determinant of WC. {fmgaigin, I didn't think your post was suggesting it. Unless you Are ?!}Too easy to manipulate by any nat'l fed. that could influence game results of its other players vs the Champ (aor of its play- ers that would play players that would play the Champ, for that matter) . Also too dependent upon the ratings & quality of available opposition and tmt activity. We have at least a half-gaggle of 2700 players now, whereas RJF had only Karpov up there with him. But having the bulk of top players across the Atlantic will maintain a Ratings bias there(as always) I think. And favor players having more access to activity vs them, assuming the player is WC calibre and able to score upon them, that is. {Or might I have this backward? Could it favor the WC player ratingwise to Not have to meet the 2700's & be on continent that only requires whupping-up on
2500 players ?! Maybe depends upon the player in question. Still seems such an unequal distribution of ratings must have some significant effects upon a "WC by Highest Elo system"}
........
I too wonder how Anand fits into the picture!? Ponomariov, I had never heard of till today. Which says a lot about how relevant to my life the Q of WC is (not). If we have 6, why not 7 instead ? One for every continent. So I'd still like to vote for Drexel, at least until the "GK-World Championship" can be held !
Unfortunately, its been brought to my attention that Everyone else around here has beat me in OTB too. So I nominate the State of Nebraska for World Chess Champion. [:-)
.....Otherwise, how about the Computer that defeated Kasparov ?! [Deep Blue Thoughts or Whatever] Has it faced Kramnick as well? Perhaps IT should be WC if it beats him.

3/16/2004 12:43:20 [ report this post ] | Anand: FORMER FIDE WC
Message: After Kasparov split with FIDE and made his own organization (whose WC title he lost to Kramnik), FIDE has held WC tournaments on a semi-regular basis (but missed last year). Various players have held these one-year WC titles, including Khalifman and Anand (who beat Shirov in the final the year he won). Kasparov and Kramnik have not played in these events, while Karpov sat out of the early ones and then played in several. Ponomariov won the 2002 FIDE WC tournament, so he is the current FIDE WC. As Craig said above, the WC title should be won, not granted by rating, but I really would like to see Kramnik and Kasparov play again so that we could either confirm the passing of the torch or not--it was a close enough match that Kasparov might well win a rematch (or not).
Personally, I shall declare Vishy (Anand) as WC 'cause he's one of the nicest people I know and because he beat me at the Olympics <LOL>!

Message: FIDE have published the new ratings for players to check before they become the "official" list in April. Kasparov comes down a bit, but is still top. Anand overtakes Kramnik (on the back of his Corus success I presume).
I would like to see the unification cycle completed without any further hiccoughs, however, I do think it's a shame that Vishy, for one reason or another, isn't included in it. He has to be the main challenger once there is a champion to challenge!

And might go furthur to say that Fischer vs Anyoneelse would generate more revenue than Kasparov vs Anyoneelse or Anyoneelse vs Anyoneselse ?! 3/20/2004 06:47:04 [ report this post ] | I only agree insofar as...
Message: ...Fischer might actually bite someone. I don't recall the 1992 Fischer-Spassky match being a particular financial boon for chess; and in terms of "good for the game" I can only paraphrase Kasparov's statement at the time that Bobby was destroying his own legend by playing second-rate chess. Even the 18-year-old girl whose hero-worship convinced Fischer to play that questionable match has since left him.
In any event, we shall soon have our questions answered. Did I say that? I meant, "Things will soon be more complicated than ever." The FIDE has announced that they will be holding their World Championship in Libya in June-July 2004 (unless you happen to be Jewish, in which case you will be playing in Malta...really); and on top of this there is news (rumor?) that Kasparov will play a unification match vs. the winner of this tourney in Hanoi in Decmber 2004. There has also been word, though I don't know the status of this, that Kramnik will defend his title against Peter Leko in Sept 2004, so I don't know if either of them will be participating in the FIDE cycle.
Anybody who has a better grip on things than I do please start a thread on this topic--just thinking about it all is giving me a headache.

Actually, Didn't Fischer-Spassky do ok for tossed together, against gov opposition, 2nd rate Chess ? I'm talking about someone of a business persuasion with promo skills to create this Happening however, of Fischer vs Kasparov.
Wouldn't you Expect Kasparov to call the RJF-BS :) match "2nd rate"? Of course it would be, with Bobby keeping his "Good Stuff" for the Big Event to follow. I suggest winning with 2nd rate Chess, is the epitome, apex, zenith, height and Glory of GM Chess! Saves the Good Stuff!! (H, I save my "good stuff' and it & I ain't even that Good!)
...Are you too young to recall what response a "Beatles" reunion would have brought ? And this doesn't even require ressurection(s).
.... Well, okay maybe it does. But surely a much easier task?
....Well, okay maybe not. But it's doeable, right ?
