 Subject: New 13 year old GM!!Message: Magnus Carlsen (ELO 2552) from Norway, born 30. november 1990 (www.fide.com/ratings/card.phtml?event=1503014), achieved his third GM norm yesterday in Dubai Open (www.arabfide.com/dubaiopen2004/) with one round left. He needed 1/2 point in the last two rounds, and got a draw against GM Alexei Fedorov (ELO 2616) in round 8 (Opening: Kings Gambit!!). When the title is official, he will be the youngest GM in the world. Magnus is tied for second place before the last round, starting 5:30 pm Dubai local time, half a point behind the leader GM Pavel Eljanov (ELO 2592). The games can be viewed live from the tournament homepages, and games from previous rounds are also avaliable. Trond, Also a norwegian, but nowhere near GM :) |

It would appear that Magnus has a photographic memory, which is a great boon for any chess player as it must make memorising endless pages of variations relatively easy for him. Alexander Nikitin, who formerly trained Garry Kasparov, reckons that Magnus is the best chess player to have developed since Kasparov himself. Certainly he will prove to be a formidable opponent for the likes of Sergei Karjakin and Kateryna Lahno, who are prodigies of a similar age to him. I very much doubt if his cracked 2700. Would be interesting if they had a carlsen-karjakin match, I think carlsen is developing more rapidly. |

Before Corus I don't think I had heard of him, whilst there was plenty of info available about Karjakin, lahno, Radjubov etc. He seems to be winning his games effortlessly, there is a cute picture of him at the Dubai Tournament....everyone is huddled over their boards concentrating fiercely whilst little Magnus is leisurely strolling about looking at everyone else's games !!! |

| soikins 5/04/2004 12:41:34 [ report this post ] | On Carlsen Message: Of course he is a very strong and talanted young player, but I agree with calmrolfe -- seems he has come out of nowhere in the last 6 months. Why there is such a fuzz about him? We shouldn't forget about Ian Nepomniachtchi -- another 13 year old talent. He finished ahead of Carlsen in the European Championships and also at the Wolrd Chempionship (U-14 I guess, not shure though). He has won the Russian U-18 championship recently with a result 9/10. Performance -- 2646. So let's look out for him too. Probably there ain't gonna be such a publicity, cause he is from Russia and it's common that strong young players come from there. If such a player comes from the West, well, that's different. |

Tournament performance rating was 2648 according to the leading norwegian site for chess news. He finished third place behind the two danish GM's Peter Heine Nielsen (2628) and Curt Hansen (2635), but in front of strong players such as GM Alexander Beliavsky (2667), GM Eduardas Rozentalis (2619) and GM Evgeny Agrest (2601). |
