Subject: Tournament Chess Boards

Message:
I am interested in buying a tournament chess set.. the kind that rolls up with weighted chess pieces. Does anyone know which sets are the best, and is their a tournament standard?

Tournament Boards

Message:
I'm sure any good reputable supplier of chess equipment will be happy to advise you which options make the most sense for your requirements. As far as I know, most if not all tournaments use standard Staunton sets.
Cheers.

Staunton

Message:
Since I have posted this message, I have searched around and find that you are right. Staunton does seem to be the tournament standard. I have looked at two different sites; www.houseofstaunton.com and www.cajunchess.com, of which the later I found was much better. Thanks for the info.

Tournament boards

Message:
In USA (opposite to Europe) people need to bring their own chess sets to the tourney. You will notice that the quality of these sets gets poorer and poorer when the player has a higher rating. Very remarkable.

I find your information both interesting and surprising. Here in New Zealand the organisation which holds the tournament provides the sets. If players are all required to bring their own sets, how do they decide which sets to use because clearly there will be double the number of sets available. Most curious.

In the USA...

Message:
Black has the choice of equipment. This applies to which set to use and which clock. Players are also required to bring their own clock.

lots of info

Message:
Thanks for all the info. It is very interesting. I found out that the Staunton seems to be the choice of chess inthusiast. While I was surfing another chess site (www.chess-shop.com) I also found that the Staunton is the standard set for all NYC parks including the green on white vinyl roll-up boards.

I think I've decided on which set I will buy now. Thanks for all your help.

I purchased my chess sets for tourament play through the U.S. Chess Federation. They may have an online store but I purchased mine through their catalog sales when I was a member of the USCF. Hope this helps - Rich
