Subject: curious endgame position
Message: any analysis on this position would be appreciated-
white- Kg1, Qe7
black- Kg3, Bf3, e2, f4, g4
it was agreed to draw, i was wondering if there was a way for either side to win. white to move.

7/15/2004 21:25:34 [ report this post ] | white win!!!
Message: this is a fast analysis but
White play 1 Qe6 and the blacks are zugswang
if they move the King white give mate and if they move the Bishop white take the e2 pawn and all the rest is easy.

7/15/2004 21:41:41 [ report this post ] | Using wt sq's,mate threats & zugzwangs
Message: It seems to me that Black is in for a bad time here after Qe5, if I haven't overlooked something. So :
Believe I'd play 1.Qe5 [Kh3??? 2.Qh5+ Kg3 3.Qh2++] or (if 1... B-move 2.Qxe2 *) 2.Kf2 (2.Qxf4???) and now BL must either lose material or face mate from Kh3??? Qh5++.
........
[Fantasy line 1Qe5 Be4? 2.Qxe4 f3 3.Qe5+ (Kh3??? Qh2++)Kh4 4.Qh2+ Kg5 5.Qg3 or Kf2 wins]
.........
*
Back to B-move try 1.Qe5 Bg2 2.Qxe2 (2...Bf3??? 3.Qh2++ or the tortuous 3.Qf2+ Kh3 4.Qh2++) ... f3 3.Qe5+ (3...Kh3??? 4.Qh2 or Qh5 mates) Kh4 4.Kf2 near zugzwang(....Kh3???5.Qg3 or Qh5 mates) ...Bh3 5.Qf5+ (better than 5.Qf4 mate threat of Qh5, which could let the K out & require technique as mentioned below,unless Qf5 gets played then anyways to stop that.) ...Kh5 6.Kg3
now if f2 then WT takes it with King (not Q) & so any other material offered. If B is going to shuttle instead, then WT plays next Kf4 and Qg5 mate.
If it ever came to a position where BL King had run down to his home near h8 etc, or started there with his B left to defend one or 2 pawns, I'd do it a little differently, using Q to hold the pawns in bay, and restrict BL King to h-file if poss. otherwise to g&h; files....then run my King (upon white squares, if need be) toward BL's King, till Queen can enter & mate in a forcing, or semi-forcing manuever (as there should be a tempo extra for use before BL could Queen.
I don't see where trying to distance the B with Bb6,Bc6,Bd5,Ba8 is anymore effective other B-moves, toward queening pawns or holding them all.
1.Qe5 Bb6 2.Qxe2 & BL faces mate in 2(again (or 1 if Kh3???or f3??? Qh2++), unless Kh4 now Qe7+ wins B(or crazy Bg2.)
If Kh4 & B is Bc6 Or Bd5 instead of Bb6 then Qc4 or Qd2 keeps on winning stuff, etc.
1.Qe5 e1/Q+ 2.Qxe1+ Kh3 3.Qf2 mate threat at h2 forces 3...g3 4.Qxf3 etc.
or if 3....Bg2 4.Qxf4! (threat Qh2++ again) g3 5.Qg5 Bf3 6.Qf5+ Bg4 7.Qh7+
Bh5 8.Qxh5++

Message: Oh indeed. Nice accuracy perro-feo ! Doesn't allow any K-move at all without deadly Qh6+ . While still maintaining the same e-file play as Qe5. Techniques are same thereafter.

Message: Clearly white has the advantage I think. My best analysis is:
1.Qe5 Kh4 2.Kf2 e1Q+ 3.Kxe1 Kg3 4.Qd4 Bc6 5.Qf2+ Kh3 6.Qxf4 g3 7.Qh6+ Kg4 8.Qxc6 Kf5 9.Qf3+ Ke5 10.Qxg3+
...and you get the picture.
