Subject: Please help me to improve my calculating skill

Message:
Hello, my real elo is approximately 1750. In my tournament and realtime online games I often make mistakes in my calculations. Please give me some advices how to calculate faster and more correctly. Should I play blindfold, study chess games without chess board or what? Is there any good software which could help me?

There is a book

"the inner game of chess: how to calculate and win" by andrew Soltis
It was one of the first chess books I ever bought and it helped me quite a bit.

Advise...

Message:
Try not calculating this or that move (if I move there, he might move here and so on)... Try to simply play the position at hand and look at what move each and every position calls for... Read the board, then calculate and play the board...

Train

Message:
Training is essential. Solve tactical puzzles every day.

There should be discipline in your thinking (train it when solving the puzzles) -- you shouldn't claculate the same moves over and over again. (like: ok, if I play 1 e4, he playes c5 then I play 2 Nf3 and he plays Nc6... Interesting position. Ok, now, If I play 1 d4 he plays Nf6, then 2 c4, he plays g6, I play 3 Nc3 and he plays Bg7. Interesting. Ok, what was there after e4. Let's look at it again. if I play 1 e4, he playes c5 then I play 2 Nf3 and he plays Nc6... Interesting position. Ok, now, If I play 1 d4... etc.) It is a very common mistake (of my own) that wastes time.

So -- training and discipline.
Good luck.

training

Message:
I know that I should train but I whant to know which method is the best. Will it be sufficient only to solve tactical problems(for example Ct-Art 3.0 problems which I have)?

training

Message:
Ct-Art 3.0 is a great program, it will help you a lot. But you must train regularly and while training you should learn to think correctly not like I described it above. Discipline is the key.

Another idea -- when you solve about a hundred of exercise, solve them again. The same exercises. See if you remember the ideas. In this way you will get aquainted with different tactical motifs and you will be able to spot them in your games quite quickly.

Training...

Message:
Often when a player has a fair understanding of the principles of chess and can make quite pretty combinations, two or three moves deep, he suddenly notices, as he meets stronger players, that his development of improvement has come to a standstill... He starts losing games without being able to assess the cause... He works out a series of moves as far ahead as he possibly can and then notices that his opponent has planned and thought in an entirely different direction... In short, he loses his grip on the game at hand...

Even after learning many opening variations by heart, it still means nothing without accurately knowing the characteristics of the positions that come from the openings... The people that try the memory method often find themselves in totally unfamiliar positions after three moves out of book are played... Positions which might even be favorable though he has no idea why they are so nor the knowledge as to how to turn them to his advantage...

A new element enters the chess battle at this stage, namely "positional understanding"... It does not grow of itself but must be developed by the process of drawing conclusions in practical play... It represents the increasing ability to form a judgement on any position whatever without going into details of exact calculations... Just like a doctor, who first has to gain a clear picture of the disease condition in order afterwards to plan the process of the cure (diagnoses / treatment) the chess player must make a plan on the basis of such characteristics as he has found in the examination of a given position...

I hope this helps...

Bro...

try this

Message:
play blindfold chess with a friend. let him keep track of the moves and the board. Any avgerage player should be able to play one blindfold game at a time and it will help your board vision treamdously.

blindfold

Message:
How often I should play blindfold to be able to achieve good results?
It is difficult to persuade my friends to play everyday against me. I can play against Chessmaster or Fritz, but which difficulty schould I choose(easy/my level/stronger than me)?

Playing blindfold is indeed a good way to develop board vision and improve memory. By playing blindfold you will improve your calculation skills, because you will make less mistakes in piece positions while calculating long variations. You will know exactly where each piece is at the end of the variation.

Don't overuse this training method. It shouldn't be used too often, because it is quite exhausting and solving tactical puzzles is a much faster way to improve.

Take a look at this site:
www.janmatthies.info/chess/cvt/cvt.htm

When playing agains Chessmaster or Fritz choose very weak players. Players who even blunder pieces. Remember that you will need a lot of time, because playing blindfold is timespending. Whwn you will have played some games you will see haw fast can you do it and at what level you can play. From my experience -- improvements will be quite noticable at first time.

cvt

Message:
Cvt is an interesting program, but it train you to play without a chess board. I think I should play without pieces but with chess board because when you play normal chess you always can see the board.
