 Subject: "LCO Chess + Terms/terminology/& abbrev's.Message: LCO Chess - Can this be a new Chess Term, abbreviated ? ******** In another thread it came up that OTB was defined as being Over-The-Board play which is played live and in person sitting across the board from the opponent, such as at a FIDE or USCF tourmament. It was brought up that Online non-correspondence style, non-turn-based style was being confusingly called OTB. So here I would like to offer the following new, easy to remember Abbreviation for the online variant of OTB play. Can we agree to call this LCO chess? Meaning Live-Chess-Online ? (Or perhaps LOC? I could maybe even remember COL {as in Collister?! ... naw!}) So here I'd like to introduce that new Abbreviation unless someone has a better one ? ................... Secondly, can us old timers get together here and each provide some of the newer players with some few to many Terms that we commonly use, or find interesting or even rarely known? I'll post a few examples next. |

Stay home & mow!") Zugazugazug = Humor for 'Move!Move!Move! Message: .....on the internet I believed that LOL stood for 'lots of love', and wondered why so many of my interlocutors sounded like evangelists, until I discovered that it really stands for 'laughs out loud', and that they were scorning me. Later, I proposed LTM for 'laugh to myself' to express a more decorous style of scorn, but it didn't catch on. :/ |

| kai_sim 9/01/2004 20:19:21 [ report this post ] | Message: I disagree! i would love to keep OTB as OTB and would not like to replace it with LCO, especialy since this is a "turn based chess" website and not supposed to be life! under life i understand some site like yahoo, where you play in a certain time frame under one day and finish the game the same day. at GK you'll get at least 2 days per move and are not supposed to finish on the same day. so, you'll have the "over night" effect and will not be able to finish it LIFE (as being "within the hour")! best regards kai and don't forget: i would like to see on GK: - A LEGAL DISCLAIMER IN ORDER TO ENTER THE FORUMS! - AMNESTY FOR EVERYONE WHO GOT EVER BANNED FROM THE FORUMS! - NO MORE BANNING (except for insults and bad words)! - ONE WARNING BEFORE THE FIRST BAN! - TO BE ABLE TO SET MY TEAM GAMES TO ZERO IN MY PREFERENCES - THE OPTION 2 DAYS PER MOVE FOR TEAM GAMES |

I think what ccmcacollister is suggesting could be summarized as follows: OTB = "Over the board," a situation where you are physically sitting opposite a live player at a physical board. In other words, the kind of chess you used to play at the kitchen table with your dad. CC = "Correspondence Chess," which also serves for the turn-based approach of GK (where there is often no actual "correspondence") LCO = "Live Chess Online," where you are playing real-time chess on a virtual board over an internet connection. Opponents can be sitting anywhere in the world and often identify themselves with ridiculous names such as bucklehead . |
