 Subject: SveshnikovMessage: As for the Sicilian, as white I never avoid it. In fact, the Sveshnikov is the most explosive opening I ever met. Keeps me on edge even in the most tiresomely theoretical correspondance game. I always venture into the following line: 1.e4 c5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 e5 6. Ndb5 d6 7. Nd5!? Nxd5 8. exd5 and then... then what? What's your opinion my fellow Gameknoteers? I would say Nb8, for a sicilian player a very annoying move but almost unavoidable. Anyone got any games for me? |

By exchanging on d5 you've lost a potential outpost for your knight and covered black's backward d-pawn. The knight can be re-deployed eventually on d7. You're losing any advantage from the opening for a momentary attack on black's knight. Plans with Bg5 aiming to control d5 are probably better. |

Objectively 7.Bg5 is the better move because it gives black more difficult problems to solve. |

Message: ...with baseline...i play with black Nb8 and there many variation...i prefer my oppnent plays Nd5 not Bg5 :) also 7.Bg5 is more tactical than Nd5 i think. "I would say Nb8, for a sicilian player a very annoying move but almost unavoidable." i dont consider annoying move..but i am not an expert :) generally i play in OTB games and i try to learn it more...i can say that my results with Nd5 are better as black than Bg5 variations... |

I agree: Bg5 is better.. for the long term. with Nd5 white (or I at least) aim for a temporarily tactical position in which black can easily go wrong (playing f.e. 8...Ne7?!). Also, it's kinda psychological. I therefore employ this move only in rapid/blitz games on the internet or OTB. But here, the story is entirely different with so many top players using Fritz or equivalent to increase their rating. You could say, the game is analysed before it is finished. Excellent circumstances to harness this variation! Therefore, thanks for the games and pointing me to the Gameknot database (didnt know that!). In this database I see my favorite move after Nb8 played only a couple of times: Qf3!? (white of course wants a tactical position so: forward march) This is the key move: getting the queen out before black can castle. the critical test would be when black just goes ahead: Be7 0-0 etc. |

Be3 and black must lose a pawn (with, in my opinion, limited compensation) because 11...b6?? 12. Qc6+ Bd7 13. Nc7+ followed by 14. Qxa8 (of 13. Qxa8 w. 14. Nc7+) wins. If 9...a6 (the best move) instead, 10. Qa3 Be7 11. Bd2 followed by Bb4 is awkward for black. |
