 Subject: What GM's Style/Sbilities You'd Choose? Message: Suppose you could have the playing "Style" of any GM, ever . . . Who would you choose? Or to combine One strong capability or Stylistic feature of several GM's ... Who and what would they be for you? Pillsbury + Karpov talents would be the SuperPlayer I'd like to be. Or for a mixture: >>>>>>> Karpov's- ablility to turn slight initiative into a win. Pillsbury's brilliance of style. Reshevsky's- tenacity under fire & in unfavorable positions. Fischer's- memory of games and positions, + depth & accuracy of analysis.. Tal's- ability to open lines and unbalance positions. Botvinnik's- unperturbability & logical approach. Kasparov's- innovative openings knowlege. Fischer's- ability to refute false "improvements" at first sight, also. ****** |
| muppyman 9/17/2004 03:46:35 [ report this post ] | hmmmmmmmmmmmmm Message: What a goldmine of hypothoses, well, I dont know about Botvinnik's inperturbability, I remember reading his comment on Fischer's 17th move against him at the Varna olympics in 1962. "The reader can guess that my equanimity was wrecked" and Fischer himself was apparently strongly impressed with Capablanca's uncanny ability to refute carefully prepared innovations across the board. But back to the point of your thread, for me personally I have to say that Bobby Fischer always was and will remain my chess hero, If I could have even one of his abilities it would be Nirvanah for me. I could easily get greedy and choose Tigran Petrosian's infinite patience in slowly squeezing out the last drop of advantage in a watertight game, always keeping the draw potential while sharpening his claws for any possible killing blows. And if I could borrow a touch of the genius of Viktor Korchnoi, I would be content. |

While I am totally appalled at his personal remarks and attitudes, I will be the first to acknowledge his mastery of every aspect of the game. He will always be number one as far as I am concerned. Now, having said that, let me say that if I could magically inherit any one player's style of play and imagination, it would be Mikhail Tal. Tal's ability to create vicious mating nets and ruthless combinations was truly awe-inspiring. Pundits have argued that Tal was not the greatest defender ever to play top level chess and may very well be right, but he only had to defend on the rarest of occassions. I can only imagine the intimidation that his opponents felt the MOMENT they sat down at the table with him. That ability to totally overwhelm an opponent by reputation backed up with surgical precision OTB would be the one characteristic I would love to have. tag1153 |

According to Robert Burger, after the speed championship of the World at Hercegnovi, Yugoslavia, in 1970, he rattled off the scores of all his twenty two games, involving more than 1,000 moves, from memory!And prior to his historic match with Taimanov, in Vancouver, British Columbia, he met the russian player Vasiukov and showed him a speed game that they had played together in Moscow 15 years prior. Bobby recaled the game move by move. His I.Q. is in the range of 180, a very high genius. According to burger, he once recalled a telephone call he had answered in iceland. He later that evening repeated EVERY word in the conversation in perfect Icelandic, with perfect inflection of the words, although he had never spoke a word of Icelandic in his life! How does ANYBODY ever compete with a mind like that? Yup, I'd love to have Fischer's memory for sure! |
