Subject: Greatest Matches Never Played ?
Message: What Great Matches would you most like to see, if you could choose any 2 players ever, for it? And you set the Match conditions.

9/17/2004 03:16:03 [ report this post ] | I'd love to see these . . .
Message: My match conditions would be: No advantage to either player in the scoring system. No rematch clause. First to score 12 points wins the match. In the event of a Tie, Both players are declared losers!
So I'd like to witness:
.....
Lasker-Botvinnik; the psychological 'player of his opponent', in a Chessfight vs The
unperturbable Scientist of Chess, promoter of logic vs the board position.
***
Fischer-Kasparov at their Peaks, Obvious reasons.
***
Karpov vs Capablanca (!) The two great Artists of simplicity and conversion of infinitesimal edge into winning of a game. Perhaps Flohr vs Petrosian, in a similar .
Maybe a great Quad !? Or Rubinstein & Reti maybe?!
***
Pillsbury-Tal (!) For a real bench clearing brawl !
Pillsbury-Fischer , For Best of the West, and superb analytical skills to be deployed.
***
Headbanger Roundrobin: Tal, Pillsbury, Morphy, Anderssen, Bronstein, Vehlimirovic, Marshall, Mednis, Browne, Larsen
***
All-Arounder-Roundrobin: Fischer, Spassky, Botvinnik, Alekhine, Kasparov, Smyslov,
Gligoric
*****
Also would love to see some great Thematics by the Greats. EG French Defence only, Sicilian only, Ruy Lopez only, etc ! Make it a Million Dollar prize fund for these, and watch the Improvements FLOW !! Wouldn't it be great ...

Message: Let's remind ourselves of one dream-match that DID take place: Capablanca vs Alekhine, arch-representatives of the two main tendencies in chess. It turned out to be what has been called "a serious contender for most boring World Championship ever".

9/17/2004 08:11:26 [ report this post ] | I think we need some more imagination here...
Message: ...though I think Fischer-Karpov 1975 would be a good one to wish for. How about Morphy-Fischer (pre-madness for each) with a Chess960 blitz (post-madness) tiebreak? I think I might also like to see a tag-team match of Reti and Nimzo vs some of today's top "innovators" such as Morozevich and Svidler. And it might have been useful to society if even an aged Philidor (d. 1794) humbled a young Napoleon. Might have made him stop and second-guess that "superhuman" sense he became possessed with at that bridge at Lodi.
From a standpoint of pure entertainment, I'd put the addled and penniless Steinitz in a tournament room with postwar Rubenstein, then pipe in some nondescript buzzing sounds. Steinitz would be trying to answer his phone call from God, and Akiba would be looking to swat the invisible fly. Under these conditions, the first player to actually sit down and move a piece wins.

Message: Morphy vs. Koltanowski blindfolded
Capablanca vs. Alekhine rematch with the proviso of 1.e4 for all games
The undercard for this would be, of course, Sokolsky vs. Grob for the title of namesake to the most cultish, freaky-hypermodern opening.

Message: Steinitz vs. God
As far as I have heard there was only one game. :( I would like to see the whole match! Or has it been played and we just don't have the scores? Give us the scores!

Emmanuel Lasker, chess champion of the world, once said in reference to Rudolf Charousek, "I shall have to play a championship match with this man some day."
