 Subject: najdorf - sozin attack.Message: I'm a bit confused about a line in the sozin attack. After:- 1.e4 c5 2.Nf3 d6 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 a6 6.Bc4 e6 7.Bb3 b5 8.0-0 Be7 9.Qf3! Qc7!? 10.e5!? Bb7 11. Qg3!? black must move his knight. White then has the possibility of sacrificing his bishop on e6 with an attack, which I think is pretty strong. Yet the line up to 10...Bb7 is supposed to be the standard way to meet 9.Qf3! Can anybody tell me why the attack wouldn't work (concrete variations please)? Regards, Cryptos :) |

I can't find any games with this line of play. This is not surprising, because 10.e5? seems to be a poor move, the obvious reply being 10...dxe5! |
| sualksnh 10/24/2004 11:40:53 [ report this post ] | 11...dxe5! Message: I don't think that Black must move the Knight after 11.Qg3. He can simply take on e5. After 11...dxe5 it's not easy for White to equalize. 12.Qxg7 is impossible because of 12...Rg8 and 13...Rxg2+. |
| cryptos 10/26/2004 09:27:27 [ report this post ] | sorry, I didn't make myself clear Message: Sorry, I should've made it clear that after 11...dxe5?! , taking with the bishop on e6 starts the attack and immediately wins back the pawn. If the sacrifice is accepted, white takes back with the knight, attacking the queen and following up with Nxg7+. Black's pawn cover is shredded, with a probable white win. Philaretus, my point was that 9...Qc7!? is supposed to prevent 10 e5!?, but after black moves the light-squared bishop he leaves e6 exposed, which Najdorf players know is a weak spot for a sacrifice. sualksnh, I know Qxg7 is impossible at this point. Also 11...dxe5 opens the d-file for white's rook if the king tries to escape to the queenside. Still not sure 10. e5!? is bad. :) |
| christian1974 11/01/2004 03:47:12 [ report this post ] | Message: 10 e5 is just about playable with the game quoted above being the usual reference game. 10 ... dxe5? is unplayable due to Ndxb5! which is very good for white. |

Message: I looked on chessbase and there's only 2 games where 10. e5 !? is tried, one being the Turner - Lea game posted above. I think Turner played pretty poorly in this game, though, playing 11. exd6 and allowing black to develop his dark-squared bishop rather nicely. I think 11. Qg3!? is a more interesting try. |
