Subject: For those of you who use Fritz...

Message:
I've recently started having Fritz analyse and annotate my completed games. I then go through and add my own annotations and thought processes, and then save the game to my GK database. My question is this... How many seconds do you let Fritz analyse each move? The default is set to 15s, but I noticed that it was not finding many memorable alternate variations unless it was just a blatant missed tactical opportunity. I set him to 90s last night, and had him analyse one of my recent games and came back to almost too many variations this time. I think all the analysed variations are certainly usefull, but some of the more bizarre and 15+ move variations I can certainly do without considering I would rarely see any of these in a real game. Have any of you Fritz guys found an optimal setting? I think I'll try 60s tonight and see how it goes. Thanks in advance...

when I use fritz to analyze a serious game I set it to either 360 or 600 seconds a move, and let it run over the night. It works fine for me

Message:
Do you run it for both colors, or just the color that you played? Maybe I'm over reacting to the long wait times for a game to be analyzed. I suppose that is normal... I suppose I shouldn't expect anything more than 2 games a day :/ It's going to take me forever to work my way back through all my GK games. Ah well, thanks for the reply.

Message:
I run it for both colours, but I only do this kind of extensive analyzis for the games that I feel are the tightest/most unclear, not for the usual "my opponent made a positional/tactical blunder which gave me clear advantage"-games. Ie often when I meet opponents over 2200 ELO I use this setting on fritz.

Quick question...

Message:
Is there a shareware version of Fritz out there?
(or does one have to pay $ for it?)

And do you recommend it?

Well...

Message:
No, there is no shareware version of Fritz that I am aware of. The only two programs that I know of that adequately annotate and analyze an entire game is Fritz and Chessmaster. I have both and use them for different things. Chessmaster is great for it's multimedia teaching modules and slick interface. However, if you are 1600+, you probably won't get much out of the teaching modules. Fritz is more hardcore with greater analysis and many more 3rd party modules that you can incorporate into the program. It's not quite as nice looking, but it has greater features. Also, the annotation can be quite different depending on which program you use. Fritz gives a much more human like annotation and commentary on the post analyzed games. I can come back to an annotated game and feel like a human master level player has analyzed my game for me. I'm not a skilled enough player to be able to qualitatively judge whether the analysis of CM is any better than Fritz, but I'll let CM analyze/annotate a game overnight and post that along with a Fritz analysis, and you can compare the differences between them. Yes, I would very much recommend either of the programs.

However....

Message:
Even though I prefer Fritz, I think CM has better personalities and a wider range of opponents and styles to play against if you enjoy playing computer personalities.

Groove,

Message:
I would very much appreciate seeing that comparison between CM and Fritz. I've been using CM exclusively because I've never been able to figure out how to get Fritz to analyze my games. I load a game, save it, tell it to analyze, and it just sits there. I know I'm missing a step but it's not obvious to me what it is.
*
If I see your comparison between the two and like Fritz a lot, I may ask for help by detailing what steps I'm taking and then asking Fritz users to point out what I'm doing wrong. Thanks. ws

Analize with fritz

Message:
To analize with fritz you need to put you in the last move (i don't now if you do that).
Another good thing is you have the possibility to, when you are make the anailze with fritz, select the option of reference database and he give some information of the games played with that line.

Ok, here they are

Message:
Ok, I'm posting them now. I picked one of my games, not for the great play (because it wasn't), but because both black and white made several mistakes, so it gives both engines a good chance to analyze. What you'll notice with Chessmaster is that it basically just floods you with any and every possible variation. It's too much of an overload in my opinion, and it states the obvious. It's also hard to play through the variations within Chessmaster. The only way that I know of to keep Chessmaster from overloading you with these types of variations is to lower the analysis per move time.

Fritz on the other hand allows you to change "threshhold" settings to where you can get all these superfluous lines if you really want to, but you have control over how detailed an alalysis that you desire. Also, Fritz is the only engine that I know of that will post lines such as "Bxc3 doesn't work due to ....." meaning that it gives traps that are wrong move sequences, but human players are very interested in seeing. I'm not sure if there are any in this game, but Fritz can do this. Anyway, I had my Fritz threshold setting for this game at the default of "30" which means that it showed "general" errors, but if I had set it for say "3", it would have filled up the screen like the Chessmaster .pgn.

If you want to view these in a PGN viewer...

Message:
These are taken directly from the corresponding .pgn files, so if you want to cut and paste them into a text file (notepad or wordpad), and then save them as a .pgn file, you can view them in your pgn viewer a little easier. Let me know if you have problems.

Steve, just download your pgn game, and open Fritz. Goto database view, and choose File --> open database --> (choose .pgn file type), and navigate to your game to open. Then double click on the game when it shows up in the game listing.

When you analise a finished game the program give you the lines he think is best, but if you want to see if that is correct, when the analises is over run the infinite analises. That don't writte in the game but you are going to see if what the program sugest is correct. I've a game (i'm going to post that game) played in OTB and is interesting to see that in one particular move in the infinite analises the program don't aggre with my move and in the full analisys he aggre with the move i made (Threshold = 0).

about Fritz. I understand it has a way of storing games into your own database vs. the one that comes with it. Is this correct and can this help me keep my current correspondance games organized.

Also is there a way in Fritz to move the pieces to self analyse as in the window here.

Lastly can Fritz's mega database be compared to your current game easily like here. I'm sure its database is an improvement over GK's.

Thanks.

"Also is there a way in Fritz to move the pieces to self analyse as in the window here. "
About this in fritz you have at list 2 ways:

1. The inifit analisys mode, the program analise the position and don't make the move, and you can move the peaces to see the evaluation.

2. Deep position analisys. The program make the analisys and writte in the game.

For the first part and last part i use a different program, Chessbase 8. In C8 you can stor your games and when you are in game window you go to the function edit, find position in reference database, and you can find the games played with that line.

I hoppe i hep you

I have Fritz 8

Message:
loaded from an original disc. However, when I try to run it, I get a message that says, "This is possibly not and original program CD." I hit "OK" and it loads Fritz 5.32, which I understand from a post above is a shareware program once distributed, probably also on the disc. Any suggestions how to overcome this? I have reinstalled the program, but it doesn't help.

Not original?

Message:
wschmidt,

I didnt have experienced it with Fritz, but seen it with other program.

Some programs try to find the CD only from the first CD-Rom (or DVD) drive. If you got more than one drive, try the first in sequence. Also, virtual cd-rom drive programs, like CloneCD, could trigger it even youre using the original CD. I had to deinstall CloneCD to install one of my game CD.

Check Fritz web site first, or write an e-mail.

Fritz 5.32

Message:
wschmidt, I do know that Fritz comes with several chess playing engines and that you can download others.

Look for "load engines" or "engines" in the help section. This should allow you to choose which engine to load and play against.

Thats the problem with Fritz. It is not very user friendly I hear. Lots of windows and too many things to set or mess up.

Fritz vs. Chessmaster

Message:
For another 2 cents, I really love Fritz's features, once I figured them out. As good as Fritz is, the interface is so difficult to figure out and the manual is not much of a help. Chessmaster is great for playing games and selecting personalities but to try and adjust Fritz is just tough. I ever play a very simple game or it blows me away and I am having a hard time fine tuning. Have fun.
