smothered knight is fun???

Message:
ccmcacollister claims this in the "what's fun about chess site". I can tell anyone it is certainly no fun at all when you are the victim of a smothered knight mate by your opponent. Especially when your opponent has just sacrificed 2 rooks and a queen to achieve it.

OOPS, I musta forgot a detail ...

Message:
Um, indeed it should be noted rose-quarz, the fun of the smothered knight mate is dependent upon one having the UNMATED-King! The one you describe, certainly
sounds fun, you were simply sitting on the wrong side of the board ! ... A minor seating error to be addressed. }8-)
But hey, now YOU'VE seen the trick and so it's YOUR turn to have the fun, next time !! And I wish you "GOOD-SKILL" in the endeavor. I assure you, it is something to look forward too !!!
Sounds like that would be a wonderful game to see in the 'memorabe games' thread
here in Chess Forum! I'd certainly like to, if you do post it [8-) .

Two "standard" smothered Mates. . .

Message:
. rose-quarz , if only you had a copy, your game would have been great here. But my mind isn't Computer-Friendly & so I forgot we only need a Board# Link to show a GK game, till jstack mentioned it. So I thought more people could enjoy it in the other thread if you had to type-out the game(not that it shouldnt go here)It sounds intriguing. Too bad it's not recorded, or the start position of the combina-
tion. ************************************************
Anyone unfamiliar with smothered Mates by knight, here's 3 more std. examples with WT to move in each one.
***********************
#1 WT has: Kb1,Rh1,Nf4 and BL:Pawns g7,h7,Kh8 & anypiece on g8. SO= 1.Ng6++
The next two are a bit more complex & elegant.
.....
#2 WT has:Kb1, Qd4, Ng5 ; and BL has: Pawns at g7 & h7, Kg8, Rc8
#3 WT has:Kb1, Qd4, Ng5; and BL has: Pawns at g6 & h7, Kg8, Rc8, Bg7
.....
In both #2 & #3 the same moves produce the Mate.
1.Qd5+ Kh8
{if 1...Kf8?? 2,Qf7++ Mate} so then next is...
2. Nf7+ Kg8
3. Nh6 ! double ck
3. . . . Kh8
4.Qg8+ Rxg8 (the K cannot take by Kxg8 since the N would be checking it if he did}
5.Nf7++
Is Checkmate in both examples #2 and #3.
********************************
A few things to take note of in #2 & #3 type Mates here:
.......
a) These two themes do come-up at times in real game situations, so it is worth knowing them. And so can example #1.
.......
b) Note that if BL's Rook had been a Queen instead, the combination does not result in Checkmate with the Knight because it would then be a case of 4. Qg8+ ?? Qxg8 5.Nf7+ Qxf7 . So in these particular examples WT would choose between
3.Nd6 ck (is discovered ck by the Q on d5}
3. . . . Kh8
4. Nxc8 winning BL's Queen {which leaves WT a won position here.}
*********************
OR if WT wants to draw this game due to tournament situation or any reason; [or perhaps BL had more pieces so that gaining the BL Queen would still not leave WT winning . . . ] then WT can force a draw here by "Three Time Repetition of Position
Rule" by the moves of :
3.Ng5+ {2nd Rep.} Kh8
4.Nf7+ {2nd Rep. That Position} Kg8
5.Ng5+ {3rd Rep.} = Draw if WT claims it here. From the TD, if opp does not acknowledge his Draw. If WT did NOT claim if here. Then he could on his next move of 5...Kh8 6.Nf7+ since That position just repeats the 3rd time there. Or could claim it a 3 time Rep Draw on the fourth Rep of 6...Kg8 7.Ng5+ / or if WT made no draw claim on 5.Ng5+ Then BL could claim his 3 time Rep on 6...Kh8 if he desired one. Or on any following 3rd or greater Rep of a position.
[Failing to claim it the 3rd ttime it happens does not prevent claiming it on any future Rep, be it 4th , 5th, 20th or beyond.]
Note WT could have used 5.Nh6 double check, or any other discoved Knight check to start repeating. But it would only have been the first Rep occurance then, not the 2nd like with 5.Ng5 . Was just a move quicker here, which would only be a clock consideration in this case of position, as others are equally forcible by WT.
.......
c) Going back and making it a Rook again, not a Queen for BLack ... It will be more common that the Rook actually be on Rf8, and so what usually happens in a real game situation is that; if BL understands the fact that 2.Nf7+ will lead to a smothered mate by the sequence of 2. ... Kg8 ?? 3.Nh6 dbl ck, etc, then BL will usually go ahead and sac the exchange by 2. ... Rxf7 3.Qxf7 & hope to survive the material loss of The Exchange, since he has at least stopped the forced mating net
here.
***********************
One more rather common Smothered Mate comes to mind, in the form of an opening trap in the Caro-Kann. Which goes like this:
1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.Nc3 (or Nd2) dxe4 4.Nxe4 Nbd7 5.Qe2 !? {a trappy but playable
variation} now the hand almost begs to play the natural feeling & typical type N move of 5.....Ngf6, but alas, then 6.Nd6 ++ MATE / Which can also occur from the
same moves, but substituting Nf3 for WT's move of d4. Making a 2 Knight CK, but
the trap remains the same, with 6.Nd6++ then too.
Twice in OTB tournament play I've had Class A players fall into the Mate, when employed againt ones I felt played too quick or inattentively in the opening. Two out of approx. 5 trys. And Qe2 has played out well even vs a couple Experts, the CK being a slower system for BL.
What BL usually plays there in leau of getting mated is 5. ... Ndf6 & then the BL Q covers d6 from any Nd6+ coming there.
*****************************
Another Smother can occur vs WT in the 3. ... Nf6 Tarrach French sub-variation in which WT plays f4 rather than the more common Bd3. But I'll leave it for the Anti-French forces to uncover for themselves ... }8-)
********************************************************
NOW REALLy, don't smothered Mates look more fun ?! ... than NOT FUN !?

Combining what ccmcacollister and roland_l have said, it is not fun to (1) play the second move of your combination first, and then (2) run the game through Fritz and have Fritz tell you that your "mistake" was the best move you made in the game!

That was one of those "I'm never going to be good at this" moments.

Blinded by rage

Message:
You'll forgive me if I use this thread for a little venting.

So I'm playing a 2/12 blitz game today (about the only time control I have the, er, time for these days). The game itself is fairly unremarkable--both sides played the opening well, some tactical imprecision in the middlegame--but I'd fought the good fight, and found myself up a N, though black had an advanced passer on the d-file. My general plan was to swap off the N against black's passer, then march my own passed pawn down the a-file. Here's the position in FEN:

8/6p1/2N2p1p/8/P3K1P1/2kp3P/8/8 w - - 0 42

Unfortunately, after a bit of time trouble, I found my N here in an unfavorable position. I got a knot in my stomach as I noticed that there was now no way for me to swap the N before the d3 pawn promoted. I stared and stared and stared, looking for the magic knight tour that would get me there in time. I considered 42 Nb4 for a while, figuring that if black chose he could have my N and RP in exchange for the fall of d3, but then I suspected that might be a losing line (ridiculous, since I could get there first, but I had like 10 sec). Interestingly, the computer gives this as a dead draw, since black can hold the necessary corner at h8 (for example, 42. Nb4 Kxb4 43. Kxd3 Kxa4 44. Ke4 g6 45. Kd5 h5 46. gxh5 gxh5 47. Ke6 Kb5 48. Kxf6 Kc5 49. Kg5 Kd6 50. Kxh5 Ke7 51. Kg6 Kf8 52. h4 Kg8 53. h5 Kh8 54. h6 Kg8 55. h7+ Kh8= ).

Of course, I chose the worst possible move: Nd4. After this, it is painfully obvious that the d-pawn will queen without incident. Only later did I discover a beautiful winning line: 42. Ke3! d2 43. Ke2 Kc2 44. Nd4+ and now the black king cannot guard everything (44. ...Kc1 45. Nb3+ with the fork; any other move loses the pawn and/or allows me to march my a-pawn unopposed). 44. ... Kc4, going after the a-pawn and the N is the best route, though the endgame is still bad for black by a large margin.

So my fundamental problem was that I was only considering one approach--exchanging the N against the d-pawn, rather than examining the other completely viable (and in this case winning) method of separating the K from its pawn. I can blame time if I want, but the fault is completely mine for terrible endgame technique.

Turning winning positions into losing ones because you are a careless idiot. Not fun. Not at all. I will be curling up with Fine's endgame manual tonight, though...when my rage subsides.

Thank you for your patience.

Suspicious? Take another look.

Message:
Pawns-kill and mrpithers - don't just look at the win percentage, also take a look at the average opponent rating too.

Misato (and myself as well) haven't finished all that many games yet, and while I can't speak for Misato, I can say for myself that when I first found the site, I was just looking for a "quick fix" - a few casual games. I sent out open invitations with the suggested rating limits... quickly became hooked, and as I got a feel for what my proper rating might be, I raised the rating limits for my challenges. Now I've started to get some losses too when I play people who are around my own level.

But the statistics won't change that fast - I still show a near 80% win percentage, because of my earlier wins against lower rated opponents.

So how do you know whether a high win percentage is suspicious? Just look at the difference between the player's rating and the average opponent's rating. OF COURSE any player will win a very high percentage of games against people a couple of hundred points below them in rating! And quite without computer help.

Mightytiny, you described my situation 100% correctly. I still dont know what rating range at GK is appropriate for me - even if there were a lot of tough games so far (and one with very much luck in a lost position). But I am sure, the first losses will come latest when I play in the second tournament round, with 1700+ the system will put me to the experts section.
