Subject: It MIGHT Be cheating, IF ...

Message:
Once upon a time; I heard a Comedian doing a skit called "You might be a Red-Neck, IF ... " (Jeff Fox Worthy, I believe it twas !?)

Well on note, I thought it might be Entertaining as a Chess prospect of :
"It might be cheating If ... '
Where we can feel free to suggest, imply aor insinuate to our heart's content ...
Just HOW/Why do you "know" your opponent is Cheating ?! (Even if you DONT REALLY know ... What gets your "Danger-Sense" hopping ?! And REALLY makes you
WONDER ... Please feel free to get it off your chest here ! This is the unloading zone; and only one restriction [besides the usual Forum Rules, plus laws of your,
State, County, Country, and Municipality as the case may be] and THAT restrict-
ion is: " PLEASEdoNOTmentionANYnamesORniksSPECIFICALLY ! "
And for that, Thank You very much. ]8-)
Regards ... Craig A.C.
I thought of this after I found a BRAND NEW way to "Look-Like" one is cheating ! So if you thought there was nothing New under the sun, take heart my friend. It
just MIGHT Be !!!?

IT MIGHT BE CHEATING, if . . .

Message:
Your honorable opponent is able to MAKE HIS FIRST MOVE online ... BEFORE the Chessboard has appeared {...and I don't mean just the pieces! } !!!??!
*******************
(... and you thought it couldn't happen ?! But it did happen to me just today at FICS, for the first time. How could this be done, without a plugged in Chess engine/program ?)
##################
GK BLITZ TIP of the DAY: ....Here on GK/BrainBlitz, I've not ever seen an opponent
be assigned to me before our Chessboard has appeared. But often it does assign your opponent & start the clocks before some or all Chesspieces have appeared ...
yours and/or his.
I used to wait for them to appear, taking up to 30 seconds! Until I found you can make moves before your pieces show-up! Handy !
Just click the Origin square & move it as if you could see the piece. It goes ahead & makes that move for you, starts his clock, & shows the Blue Boxes where either
players last move began and ended ... as normal. As if you could see the pieces :)
{This quirk is most common for your first game of the day.}

They might be cheating if...

You notice that their moves take exactly the same amount of time it takes to enter a move into a computer for "testing" purposes and despite the fact that you reply to their moves instantaneously and take them into a very deep line of the Closed Sicilian, they never make a single mistake and never take longer than exactly the "right amount of time" to determine their perfect move.

The reason a person's team Elo is much lower could be due to playing only a few team games and not having a chance to bring it up.

Clarification

Message:
Apologies for a poor explanation on my part. I understand that many players team ELO is lower than their standard GK ELO for perfectly legitimate reasons as you rightly stated. I checked the details I stated above a few of days ago, upon checking again it appears the player is no longer on a team, but still the points difference remains on the profile. GK ELO in 1700s Team ELO 1100s. As for reasoning behind what player's actions regarding team games, I have no idea.

Also noted, an overall dramatic drop in points (hundreds of points dropped in a short space of time). Checking their past games it was evident that over a single 24 hour period the player resigned around 55 games, a significant number of which (havent checked all of them) were also started on that very same day and then resigned after only 4, 5, 6 moves etc. That to me would appear to be a deliberate attempt to lower their rating, whether for team purposes to get better match ups or some other reason that I cannot fathom. I really dont understand why a player would continue to start games that they had no intention of completing.

Other possible reasons:

Message:
To lower their Elo prior to GK tourney.
To stick it to a team before quiting the team.

or- A legitamate reason came up and instead of postponement chose to resign.

Why not ask them?

Message:
...your opponent's past game history indicates that he regularly plays against people with ratings anywhere from 800 to 1800 and is just as likely to beat 1800 and lose to 800. Where's the challenge in playing repeatedly against ratings 800-1000 if he's capable of beating a rating of 1800? Why bother? Of course, it's all the same if he's just feeding the moves to Chessmaster. Or how could you beat a rating of 1800 then lose to a rating of 1200? Well, a guy does like to really play chess himself once in a while. Just feeding Chessmaster all the time could get kinda boring!

Opponents Resigning Massive Games

Message:
I've wondered why a person I was playing resigned in a position where they had the upper hand, not a win but looking better. I then saw that the person resigned about 20 games that day and dropped the rating about 400 points. Still not sure why you would do that. I thought this was about fun. To bad I spent about 35 moves on a game that ended without reason. Lessons learned.

Re: Opponents Resigning Massive Games

Message:
I am guessing that you felt prompted to share your experience in this particular thread because its topic is cheating, and you felt cheated of the opportunity to finish that game. However, I can think of at least three legitimate reasons why a person might want to drop 20 games, none of which are connected to cheating. Firstly, there might have been a sudden demand on his time, like a new full-time job, or a serious illness in the family. Secondly, he might have been worried about becoming addicted to chess and was trying to control his habit (chess, like gambling, absolutely has the potential for becoming an addictive behaviour). Thirdly, a combination of one and two, either his wife or his employer might have told him he was spending too much time playing chess and firmly suggested that he rearrange his priorities immediately. I can also see how, given any one of these reasons, your opponent might have felt disinclined to explain the reason for his resignations. Chess is surely supposed to be about fun, but there are times when obligations intrude, and there are other times when fun stops being fun (ask any recovering addict).
*
In any case, allow me to offer two suggestions for your consideration. Firstly, before you accept a challenge, or definitely before it becomes too late to cancel, take a look at your opponent's total games in progress. If it is above a certain number (your predetermined ceiling), decline the engagement. Secondly, analyze that game and figure out what your opponent had done to give him the superior position and what you could have done better. As the game lasted 35 moves, it must have lessons to offer as recompense for the disappointment it caused.

donf44's opponent

Message:
id=donf44 , that does seem to be rather bizarre behavoir of your opponent. I agree with the comments of i_play_slowly in general, but none of those suggestions seem to apply in your situation. Many games were literally dumped but then numerous additional games were started the same day. Maybe the player liked to play fast as many games were started and finished the same day too, so maybe games that were going slower she just dumped. Don't see how it's technically cheating, but can understand your frustration.

Cheating

Message:
Firstly as I am new to Gameknot let me say high on behalf of my self, ,my wife and son. My wife and I are playing chess for the first time in 10 years, this is true for my son also who has not played since he was 5. Cheating is an area of concern for us, although no more than it used to be in correspondence chess. (difference then was you needed a lot of money to get a comp that was not a complete idiot and even then .......... well they were cr*p) Secondly what can we expect from the players of a given rating, I used to have a BCF Grade and a BCF Rapid Play one as well, I also had a British Corres Chess Society grade. But we have no idea what to expect from say a 1000, 1500, 1800 or even a 2000 on here, so can't tell if their play is suspicious.

It is nice to see that things have not changed that much whilst we have been away LOL. Grades have always been exploited to earn cash on the weekend circuit, I used to see the "pros" as my wife and I travelled the country playing most weekends.

On multiple ids, there are three on this computer. myself, my wife (who also used to have a BCF grade) and my eldest son who has not played anyone beyond immediate family before. I have 3 more kids to bring on line in due course.....

On chess computers. My mother is still having regular games with a Chess Challenger 10 acquired in circa 1980, when I believe it was world microchamp. I bet they are rare these days......

Cheers

PS, I also have an extensive library of books which are out of date by at least 10 years. So I have some sympathy with the guy in the other thread.
