 Subject: New 18th Correspondence Chess World Champion!Message: ICCF is very glad to announce that GM Joop van Oosterom (Netherlands) has just finished his participation in World Championship Final 18, in which he has achieved a tremendous score of 11 points in 14 games (8 wins, 6 draws). This makes his score impossible to beat or draw by another participant, thus making him the 18th World Champion! He also played against an extremely strong field - including Umansky and Rause and Achim - this achievement might be one of the finest ever. Some of the new champions might not be of this quality (or they might be , but they will not play against this competition) - this might be the last of the championships at the highest level. So a heartfelt cheer for Joop and a little sadness at the great days of correspondence chess that might be in the past. |
