Subject: About Bobby Fischer
Message: It would be interesting to hear your views on Fischer. He is now a citizen of our country. There was a poll taken here in Iceland and I think that 70 % did not want him here. Still no politicians spoke out against him even though 25 % of the parliment was missing when the vote was taken. What do Gameknot players think about this matter, and not only the American ones. There is an interesting article about Fischer on an Icelandic news website which is in English !!!

Message: I did.
It's quite a lenghty article and I got about 2/3 through before giving up. The problem with this as with just about every other thing that's written about him is, that a lot is being said or claimed yet nothing is proven, no recources given, not one single fact is backed up by anything (and, being accustomed to scientific articles, I consider "x said that y" not as backing up statement y)
That makes it a single opinion which might well be right - it certainly makes sense to me - but which is nevertheless still nothing more than _claiming_ certain things.
So unless anyone cares about giving detailed evidence about the claims he makes, I would think that leaving this guy and his supposed anti-semitism, his admiration for Hitler, his CIA and KGB theories and everything else alone would be the decent thing to do.
Frankly, what annoys me the most in this whole sad story is the kind of letter that was written by US chessplayers to the White House pleading for the charges against Fischer to be dropped. (you can find that somewhere at chessbase.com) Kinda sad/scary what that tells about the relation of the US public to their leadership...

Message: I think that Fischer is not sane in the sense that we think people are sane But who are we to judge what is sane. Here we have a tolarance that what ever you say or write is your reponsability, you are free to write and say whatever you feel. But we have a law where you cannot talk badly and entice ( I dont know if this is spelled correctly) about a race or religion that would cause problems for them. If a person would have said what Fischer had said we would not have allowed him here as a tourist. What he has said about America is tolerated as political views. What he has said about jews so far, he has broken Icelandic law. But the only thing that we could do to him is giving him a fine.

Message: Look a couple threads down from yours.
"Bobby is Free" and "Fischer is free"
Something like that but the threads are just a few
down from yours.
Anyhow, I am glad Iceland gave him a home. I
think Fischer is nuts. I hope he does not turn
on his new guests as he has on everyone else.

Message: Hi I saw finally where you replied. I thought you had started a thread in your name. I myself do not agree with any of Fischers comments, and I think if he would have gone to the States for a trial he would have gotten of as insane or a llittle bit crazy. But the chessworld here in Iceland could not tolarate a man being kept in jail for 9 months without due process as people say in the US. So people here did something about it. I lived in the States for 3 years and have high regards of all the people I met. When you live in Iceland you have to be a little crazy, so our friend will fitt right in.

Message: I think Fischer is overrated. He was a fantasticaly talented player for his time, but not for very long, compared to the careers of many other GMs. I think Fischer should finally play a long awaited match against Karpov. He never did face Karpov for the world title. It would be funny to see Karpov trounce Fischer 14-0 in 2005 match in Iceland.
