Subject: Calling all 1700+ Boffins out there.....
Message: Hi There,
I need some help with my game....OK, I'm desperate....
After an OK start on GK I've recently started to slide in form after a few tough mini-tournaments. This has caused me to pause & re-evaluate my technique....
I haven't played OTB for several years, and my openings lack variety.
I'm looking for some friendly, helpful soul rated 1700+ who's willing to coach/play me unrated (perhaps with messenger?) and perhaps even analyse some of my past games, to show me a fresh new approach, particularly in middle-to-endgames. I'm looking to improve my game in order to join a team later on this year.
I can't offer much in exchange except for some good conversation (perhaps a chance to practice some English?!!?), a few laughs & a virtual glass of wine, beer, whatever .....or 2 ? My bar is plentiful....
If you're interested & can spare a few minutes a day, feel free to respond here or privately.
On a related note, I also wondered if anyone had thought of starting up a coaching club? Perhaps with different levels....beginners (I would be willing to help here) ....intermediate.....advanced.....does anyone else here think this is a good idea /or would be willing to participate ? Obviously we would need more boffins to coach the advanced clubs...Could this be you?....Or a friend you know ??!?
Regards,
Sam

p.s. Boffin=English slang for an intelligent, scientifically minded person, usually engaged in research into a specialist subject
p.p.s Bobby: if it's a little quiet in Reykjavik....mail me ;-)

Message: Indeed a good suggestion, although it (coaching club) requires a lot of work. I could help out with coaching intermediate players (up to ELO 2000, which gives gk rating of...?). I'd also like to help you out with your play, but I'm off to stockholm for a few days, so I'll not make a move 'til after the weekend. Btw, challenge sent :p
Now I really gotta go, need to get everything ready for the trip to out sweet capital! ;)
Regards,
Thalagor

Message: It has been my experience that one of the best ways to improve at chess is to teach it! There is something about verbalizing and showing someone what you already know about chess which reinforces your own understanding. I will send you a challenge as white and as black (unrated of course).

Message: I think the idea of coaching clubs is a great idea. At present, I haven't got sufficient time to help, but maybe in the near future I will have more time (hopefully!!).
As for a bit of help personally, I have already been playing a few games in a particular opening with odonata which I think has been beneficial to us both. We agreed what opening we were interested in and then played unrated games in various lines, with discussion of tactics, options, etc as we went along.
If you would be interested in anything like this, then send me a message and we can get something sorted out.
Good luck

Message: Yes, teaching/coaching clubs would be an interesting idea and new feature that would seperate this site from the rest. For example, people would submit they wish to be a teacher, then someone could join them as an apprentice. All this, of course, would be 100% voluntary, free of charge, so nothing is lost, if he/she is a bad teacher, you as an apprentice can just leave and find another teacher. But there would have to be some guidelines, like:
1400-1600= teaching newbies below 1200
1601-1900= teaching intermediates around, say the 1500 range
1900 plus = teaching those close to master status but can't figure out how to get there. . .
Interestingly enough, if such a feature were implemented, it might be a good experience to be an apprentice and a teacher.

3/31/2005 13:11:16 [ report this post ] | coaching club?
Message: I just started a new thread to pick up on the direction this thread has taken. Samspammers, I didn't mean to hijack your request for a coach, but since superblunder has responded to your request, I wanted to restart the "coaching club" discussion under a new, more descriptive name. If any of you have any ideas about what you would like a coaching club here at GK to look like, please give me your suggestions!
