Subject: Colle question

Message:
I know a lot of folks are down on the Colle system as for rank amateurs, but since I qualify I've been playing around with it. One reply by black is puzzling me, though: 1. d4 Nf6 2. e3 Nc6 3. Bd3 e5

Not sure what the best reply by white is to this...any ideas for me? thanks

IMO

Message:
The best reply is to Prevent his 3...e5 by a change in your move order to 3.Nf3 [or 3.f4 would go into the Stonewall instead of a Colle.] , just in response to 2...Nc6 or 2...Nd7, if you wish to remain in a Colle.
But also be aware that the White side of this opening can be transposed into some nice variations of the French Defence Reversed, or close to it ... which IMO is Not a Bad Thing! As long as your B is not on d3 yet, & keeping that in mind, you really would have nothing to fear then even if BL did get in ...e5, and even ...e4 after. In that case your King Bishop would be nicely at home at Be2, or Bb5. So you can, if you wish, offer him an easier route to a Reveresed French by 2.Bb5 or Be2 then follow 2...e5 by 3.Nf3.
***
Otherwise just 2.Nf3 makes him work a lot harder to get in ...e5. Unless he goes with 3...f6 but doing that costs him time later since that formation is not really compatible with his presumed ...e4 push of the future.
I think it comes down to WT not being able to force BL into proper Colle lines if he is determined to avoid them. Due to the nature of WT's 2.e3 just not being a very forceful move. But its not a bad move either, and there are plenty of good positions to be found if you are willing to bend a bit when someone refuses to book it. For EG they might try 2...c5 to meet 3.Bd3 or 3.c3 with c4?! Which is nice for WT, but just takes you away from where you intended to go. }8-)

colle

Message:
I have 2 books on it and play it quite alot. I have gotten some good wins and bad loses. If you want to learn more let me know. Also you may want to learn more about the slav & semi-slav as black since they are the same opeing with colors reversed.

Nf3 is tha way to go!

Message:
Yes Nf3 does stop black from playing e5 without building it up.... In the colle you should be able to play e4 before Black plays e5. If black plays an early e5 i think dxe5 is fine.

Question of a Colle novice

Message:
1. d4 d5 2. Nf3 Nf6 3. e3 e6 4. Bd3 c5 5. c3 Nc6
6. Nbd2 Bd6 7. O-O O-O 8. dxc5 Bxc5, up til now nothing new, my question for the Colle experts (I'm novice in it), is the way to continue e3-e4 or is someting like b2-b4 a good alternative?

e3-e4

Message:
all my colle books say e3-e4. b2-b4 would give you a backwards pawn that black could attack

My research turns up two "best" moves for the games I have with at least one player rated 2700+. Either 6.Nbd2 or 6.O-O appears to be in order in my opinion....

Whoops Odonata

Message:
Sorry, I missed your moves 6 to 8 before, but the games I posted should still be relevant. But at move 9 I would concur (from what little I know) and do 9.e4...
