Greetings b123

Message:
but you can't have a thread like this without a nod to George Bernard Shaw's pithy, yet staggeringly accurate quotation:
"Chess is a foolish expedient for making idle people believe they are doing something very clever when they are only wasting their time."

Loser: "Well, how would you have played that game ?"

Message: The German philosopher Moses Mendelssohn declared, "Chess is too much of a game to be a science and too much of a science to be a game".
A similar comment, "Chess is too earnest for a game; too much of a game to be earnest about", is attributed to his grandson, the composer Felix Mendelssohn.

Message: No you didnt write that! I think it was an offhand comment of postmortum, and Yes the Editor (ahem) did think hearing it was funny and ran with it. After coming thru Waz in the process, I believe. So you wouldnt have gotten my "reply" until print. Apologies for sounding like you might have written it ... :(
But Waz and I thought it was funny :)

I really like that Tarrasch quote from matthew_romoser :))
Even better than Fischer's "I've never beaten a healthy opponent" !

Message: "If one piece is badly placed, the whole position is bad." (Tarrasch)
-Seems a little harsch maybe, but a good 1 to remember b4 trying anything stupid.
The overprotected point becomes a source of energy from which the overprocters can collect steam from! (me remembering Nimzowitschian idea.)
-A useful idea some may find a little too much for their minds to swollow (we know Tarrasch critized Nimzos ideas) but when a weak point is overprotected it means freedom of movement for all the protectors and cant be all bad!
If u cant see the fool around the table ur the fool! (poker wisdom)
Try to remember and repeat the oneliners explaing all common tactical themes. This will really help your eyes, and give u ideas to create weaknesses.
Overworked pieces, zugs, removing the defender, the pinned defender, weak backranks, doublethreats,
Never believe in ghosts. (me)
Always play the move u think is best, accept real gambits, if u think u can shop-lift a pawn unscattered do so!
Anyone continuing to play rook down without any real comp. is a fool (Nimzowitsch)
Time is of value use it to get inspiration not to waste time.
Invite everyone to the party! (common way of making some1 embarassed)
Dont think combinations, combinations flow from a superior position hence 1st think position. (me)
Do not haste!
When a farmer loses 1 pig hes heartbroken! When wife (beginner in chess)tries to comfort him he wont listen cause he knows that all the time and food the little bastard consumed, but mainly all the other neglected work at the farm may put him out of business. (me remembering great old Nimzo)
Beware of natural moves! (Reti)
Try to get really crazy sometimes in the ay u look at the game! (me again)
Try to imagine the pawns as greek hoplites in the way their acting in front of the other troops.
Some games reminds of real battles. Ive seen pig- bay 1962 for instance.
