Subject: Chess Habits/Music

Howdy ... A past subject, but surely some new players have arrived in the last year or two. Just wondering what anyone else does to get in Chess mood. Or any essential ingredients to play. Me, I like to listen to music and play. Rock-n-roll forever! Some say Mozart makes your brain work better!? (Hmm, I Like Beetoven, maybe thats whats wrong! !? ) I'm going to try blitz to some Chicago. Bye

depends on the position

classical for positional games (Julian Bream classical guitar is well-suited).
Something hard for a tactical game.
When I have a really bad position I listen to Hank Williams and the two of us suffer together.

Sounds good to me! I like some Rammstein or GnR or Zeppelin sometimes for blitzing. Or some Ozzy. Something that gets you moving inside, and out on the board! I'll have to check into your choices. I've heard of Slayer, but not HEARD any of their music. Same with Pantera. Wonder if that would be another get ya moving try?! Of course, my generation back around the Civil War, we'd listen to Ted Nugent or Aerosmith too.

Entombed and Merciless are Swedish bands playing a bit aggressive.

Btw, if I'm looking for brilliant moves I would have to listen to something like 'Captain Beyond' or something.

My theory, based on Aristotle's concept of 'mimesis', is that music which is well composed can help me become well composed--perfect when I need to focus on a game of chess. For this purpose, I prefer chamber music, especially Beethoven's string quartets and piano sonatas, since chamber music is not so dense that it intrudes between me and the chess board.

I would invite anyone to try this theory and let me know how it works.

i'm with dave on this one, in a way.
i prefer silence if i'm playing a long game. when i'm here on my computer, though, playing blitz or gameknot, i will always listen to music if possible.
i also prefer silence if i'm studying or reading.

my oldest brother, though, listens to music while he's studying or reading. you just learn to tune it out i guess.
i think that that would be best actualy, because it might teach you to focus even when distractions may be around you.... sort of.

a lot of the time, especially when i started playing chess, i could get distracted fairly easily. i think i'm better at focusing now, but i still need to work on some things.

no particular music seems to help me concentrate when i play blitz.
my favorites are metric, the dears, feist, rufus wainwright, divine comedy, rem...

...perhaps it has! I do listen to Cream - an old favorite. I've lost my Disraeli Gears album tho' :-(. I find certain types go with different colours. Rolling Stones tends to go with the Black pieces; Cream (as you would expect) with the White...

when I play, I enjoy listening to some bach (especially on the guitar by Andres Segovia and John Williams). It's diffinately not the most exciting or enjoyable music to listen to by itself, but it doesn't distract me and stimulates my mind quite well.

nottop, you should listen to Pepe Romero play . You might wind up selling your Julian Bream CD's if you do. (his most recent recordings are the best, and none of them have been messed with by the computer, Everything you hear is exactly as he plays it)

I've begun listening to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra while I play. It seems they mix between the old classics and modern music (electric guitars and such) so they're more powerful, and more fitting with some games

...a game to contemplate. One plays the White pieces whilst listening 'Jesus Christ Superstar', while the opponent listens to 'Sympathy for the Devil'. Make it Chess Kriegspiel, with players in separate rooms, DVD players (or whatever) going full blast, whilst the gamemaster's walkman plays 'Gimme Shelter'...

Tried once

but doesn't quite work.
My mind first tries to concentrate on both game and music. It gives up after a couple of seconds and just concentrates on the game. Then it tells me something interesting might be happening with the music l start considering silly moves.
A few seconds later, it decides it's better to concentrate on the game again as I already know that part of the score and pulls me back towards the game.

This lasts a couple of minutes when a legion of other thoughts enter the fight, like "put the music softer", "what is this guy doing?", "sounds a bit like mozart", "what was I thinking?", "maybe I should switch off the music", "How did that pawn get there?","where's the ashtray?"

It ends with my nervous system taking my brain to the cleaners and me switching both music and game off and looking for something to kill.

oh yea i forgot to tell you nfl films music is great to play chess by as u know by now if u are a football fan of the nfl the music of nfl films is fantastic this was the music used from the 1960s to the present day i have autumn thunder 40 years of nfl films music and the power and glory cd if u play chess to this music u will feel like a true warrior try this with your next games u will thank me.

Silence

Since joining Gameknot, I've only ever played in silence. I reckon music would disturb the processess too much. Maybe something like Eno's ambient stuff or Cocteau Twins might work..When I've finsihed though the stuff that comes out of the Paradigm Phantoms would be The The, Sylvian, Stereolab, Bowie, D*Note, Miles Davis and Diamanda Galas for a right good shriek!!

I begin to believe there IS a connection between finding a note on your guitar and finding a tactical shot. I am playing Chess like a , um not good chessplayer, since breaking my hand and it was declining even before that when the amp shorted out... }8-(
Still, did not too bad tonight with The Cult playing, and got some nice attacks amidst the blunder-fuddles . Hmmm, yes indeed that DOES sound like my guitar! (And I dont mean Duffy ... no, the blunder-fuddles part I mean)
