Subject: FICS

Message:
Does anyone play on this Free Internet Chess Server? If so, would you be willing to put your FICS nick here? I'd like to see some GK folks playing some real-time chess there. Also, I'm looking to join a team there if anyone here has an FICS team and is looking for members!

I just joined up and my nick is: rlawrence

I'm thellemb

Message:
But I usually spend more time here on GK. Depends a bit what I feel like, and how busy I am following up my GK games. Blitzing here is usually a waste of time, so for blitz and rapid games (15-30 minutes/game) I play on FICS.

I play there...

Message:
...when I have the time (not recently!) as DimKnight. I've thought it might be useful to compile a list of GK/FICS/ICC/etc handles so people can seek out fellow GKers, but I don't know how this might be implemented.

I play CHESSANYTIME.COM

Message:
& several sites.
Niks used: Ktun, tempusfugit, BaronDerKilt, or DamianS.
For me, ratings tend to vary according to time controls I play at the time.
******************************************************
[10+5] = 2100ish, [3+2sec] = 2000ish,
[3min] to [1+3secs] = 1900's,
[2min] to [1+1sec] = 1800ish,
[1+0] = 1700's
***********
Over at the Chessanytime FICS they do have Tournament set-ups from 3 minute games up to 10min.+5 second games. Including straight 5 minute games. And they can accomodate from 4 up to 6 or 8 players in such sections. The slower TC's are for 4 players and the faster ones may take more than that. It is probably my favorite place to blitz.
...
I think it would be great to see 4 or more GK players get together at a certain time there and play a tourney sometimes. I'd like to do that if anyone else is interested.
{What you think Jeff ... how bout a 10+5 quad ?} ... For instance, would Sundays a good time for anyone besides me? EG Is 3:00pm GK time good for anyone else?
...
Or what time(s) would be good for anyone else ? My schedule can be pretty flexible.
Even just getting a group from GK to show up at a particular period, for informal play could be a good time. If we know each others' Niks there .

Happyness ...

Message:
I'm still well under the 20 games for both Blitz and Standard ratings at FICS, but currently Blitz (my weakness!) rating is at about 1400, and standard rating is just over 1600.

FICS offers team league options with nice slow time controls of 45 45. Perhaps we could get enough interest to start a GK team? I believer there are U1800 teams, U1600 teams, etc etc.

I play at FICS under the handle 'megalopsuche.' I mostly play 5 minute games there and get my a** kicked by people who think the endgame is an entirely different sport. I only play blitz here at GK when I'm in the mood for baby seal clubbing and need to stroke my ego.

I hope no one minds

Message:
...but I'm going to keep a list of GK players and their FICS handles in my finger notes over there. If I get ambitious, I might put you all on my notify list as well...

Sounds great ...

Message:
I'll do the same. Once I get my 20 standard games in I'll revist the idea of getting a GK team together for the 45 45 league ...

gameknot vs yahoo chess

Message:
Gameknot is far superior to playing chess at yahoo and i dont care if yahoo is played in real time. There are a lot of sore losers at yahoo. i have not ran into any poor losers here at gameknot. However yahoo chess can be fun too despite the fact that some people can be morons gameknot rules,

I don't ...

Message:
... care much for yahoo either. The board is weak, and its hard to find a game in the parameters I like.

GK is a fantastic correspondence site.

The more I play FICS, the more i like it though (for real time chess). I rarely have to wait, there's a great range of players, and plenty of players willing to play good longer time control games.

Yahoo is a waste of time...

Message:
...as is the MSN site. Very few serious players, and a high percentage of jerks. Plus, I understand that there is a very serious bug at Yahoo that lets some users hack your clock and leave you with just a couple of seconds to play. If you have any doubts, check out this page -> www.edcollins.com .

On the other hand, richfeet , understand that turn-based correspondence chess is a different animal than real-time chess--make the most of your time and come up with some really beautiful moves!
