Subject: Tactics Collections and GUIs

Message:
Hello. I'm trying to get some tactics collections to go over to improve my game. Since my main goal is otb play, ideally I would like to view the positions from my fritz which has a 3d feature. Is this possible and does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks

Humph.

Message:
Not to sound bitter, but I posted a bunch of tactics links like a month ago, a post which received exactly zero attention. I therefore post them again, because boy is this a useful thing.

This site -> dejascacchi.altervista.org has links to .pdf files for 3000+ FREE tactics problems and 3000+ FREE "best move" problems. One of the nice things about these sets is that, in the vast majority of cases, they have been taken from actual OTB games instead of being constructed around a theme.

If you want the tactical problems in PGN format, you can download them directly from this link -> www.cmpgo.de . You should be able to feed these directly into Fritz and get moving. In the alternative, you can go here -> www.cmpgo.de and download a program that (while primarily designed to access a German chess server) has these tactical exercises built directly in.

I've been working through the tactical problems for the past few weeks, and have found them extremely valuable.

Message:
I'm not sure if this will help you or not , but I think it is very useful.CTS is the Chess Tactics Server and this is a quote from the site:

"Currently 23,803 tactical chess problems with a degree of difficulty ranging from trivial to ambitious are provided to be solved against the clock. Your tactical performance will be measured by the Glicko rating system. The problems are rated too.

You can sign in completely anonymous as guest to get familiar with the chess board interface, browse some problems or just look around.

If you managed to slove the problem in three SECONDS your rating will increase , and within 10 sec will increase also but not the same as 3 sec.Anyhow you can examine all prolems as a guest.

If interested, you'll just need a valid email address to register and join our community. "

The team work there provide a very good statistical studies about the problems and the players , and I think that the high rated problems there worth a look.

This is a link for the site: -> chess.emrald.net

The Chess Tactics Server rules!

Message:
Because the Chess Tactics Server (CTS) is interactive, it's vastly superior to any collection of puzzles. As you succeed, CTS offers progressively more challenging puzzles and your rating goes up; as you fail...

Chess tactics server

Message:
Indeed a nice site, but not really suited for me. After one session my rating dropped to 1100. The first timer is usually already gone, before I know whose turn it is. The problems are very easy, but those times are so quick, that I can't seem to prevent going down even though all my answers are right. This makes it a bit frustrating.

Bucklehead are you the one who posted the "predator at the chessboard" link? I've been going through the whole book ever since, very useful.

I tried the cts server but like naamloos I find the time much too fast, I can't even take in the position before I miss the problem.

Can anyone give a quick explanation of how to feed pgn's into chessbase programs?

Thanks!

I tried the chess tactics server. One of my problems were just wrong and it took a while before I realized who it was that should move and that it's not mate in 5 situations but it's the best move. Good luck finding "the best" move on a loaded board in 3 seconds, 2 seconds if you're counting on how long it takes to click and move a piece. And with that, be sure to realize that sometimes you start in check!

Something for the addictive personality? More something if you want higher blood-pressure.

I have to take that back. First you get 3 seconds to watch your opponent act (which I didn't get, just thought it was badly controlled) then you get to act. I reached 1500 before I quit. Quite entertaining.

I'm also using -> chess.emrald.net, but if was wondering if this could not lead to bad habits? I mean you've to be fast to get a good rating there, so I'm a bit worried that it could lead to the blitz syndrome...
