Message:
Thanks everyone for contributing to Chess Terminology Thread #1. Lots of great and interesting info. And doubtless much more that's unsaid ... so I am starting this thead #2 for Terminology, and transferring ionadowman 's last post here keep things going from there, since he introduced a new aspect ...

IONADOWMAN 's last post from TERMINOLOGY #1 :
A fairly literal translation...
...of 'kaputt' would then be Fischer's favorite expression 'busted'. It, too, has vaguely childish connotations, or connections, but is pretty expressive of an irrecoverably lost position. By the way, the German 'kaputt' has entered the English language as 'kaput'...
One area we haven't discussed are terms for players one perceives (or tries to persuade oneself) as being much weaker than oneself. Locally, such terms have been pretty unimaginative: 'rabbit', 'bunny', 'hack', and I'm familiar with 'patzer', though it isn't used here. Any others?
Cheers,
Ion

Message: Wasn't it Fischer reputed to have brought up "weakies" ... tho not exactly sure that it related only to Chessplayers.

Then there is the Omaha favorite of "Fish". [With its alternate spelling "ghoti", that I first heard of from fmgaijin , here in the GK Forums; which was created by a famous author whose name escapes me right now, unfortunately :( ...]

And some others: Class F, woodpusher, free-point, bottom-rung, novice, beginner, duffer, neophyte, pushover, rookie .
...might be heard upon occassion, tho only the first few seem to refer specifically to Chess. That's all I can think of right now.

Hmmm, wonder why I can't think of much in the way of descriptors we use for players perceived of as STRONGER than us?! Perhaps "prodigy", natural, genius ...
savant ...

The author is in fact a playwright, Grievous Bodily Shaw, a.k.a. George Bernard...
Much stronger players we might call 'sir'...

Message: I think it has an Arab origin and it designates a position that makes the transition between the opening and the middle-game. The old satranj masters would used predefined and mutual agreed position to save time in the opening phase. They were symmetric and counted somewhere between 12-20 moves.
