Subject: 2nd best "Game of the century

Message:
We all know Bobby Fischer own's the title for "Game of the Century"

I know this is a matter of opinion, but I was wondering what other people think of being the second best "Game of the Century"

Reti vs. Alekhine 1925

a very, very tactical game, most interesting game i have ever seen.

Many consider this Alekhines best game, notice his move of h5 on 19, is the beginning of black(Alekhines) plan of Re6 that he plays on move 26, 7 moves ahead. and blacks attack that follows is a work of genius. alekhine uses his rook so powerfully that it does not matter that the queens are off the board, his attack is still overwhelming with the centralized rook even as it is en prisse for many moves

much any game by Tal would be up there but his game against Fisher Bled 1959 was unique in as much on move 22 Fisher plays Qc6+ which in effect loses the game. Tal asked him why he did not play 22Rae1 and Fisher said you laughed when i wrote it down!!! Also their game in Zagreb candidates in 1959 is worth a look.

Check out the rook endings...

Message:
...fought out between Fischer and Smyslov in 1959, too (I think it was in the Candidates). Not exactly '2nd best game of the century' country, but pretty good.
Personally, I would be disinclined to regard the Byrne -Fischer game as really deserving of the 'Game of the Century' title, very fine and exciting game though it is. The fact is, however hard he fought, Byrne (Donald?) was outclassed. But what would I put in its place (assuming I would want to)? In general terms, I would like to see a good fighting game between players at their best. Game 13 of Fischer-Spassky 1972 match would be suitable were it not for lapses by both sides. World Championship matches have been disappointing in this respect, at least until the Kasparov-Karpov slugfests (that both survived these with their health more or less intact is a tribute to the physical and mental stamina of them both). Could a suitable candidate for the top title come from them?
By the way, did Tal really laugh, or merely smile? (A strong looking attack I had once broke against my opponent's unwavering smile... :-( ...).
Cheers,
Ion

I remember a great Rook ending between Fischer and Keres too, in a Ruy. Since I remember it, its probably in 60 Memorable Games ... :)

USSR Championship 1957

Message:
Nezhmetdinov v Tal, USSR Championship in Moscow, 1957. Tal played the French Defence and after move 13 he calculated a full 20 moves ahead to forsee a winning position. A brilliant excercise of foresight deserving of the richest praise, unfortunately, Nezhmetdinov calculated even further ahead and completely destroyed Tal's position....

Do not forget Ed. Lasker!

Message:
I do remember game in which Edward Lasker sacrifies his queen in order to check mate George Alan Thomas' king after eight or nine moves. And moreover the finishing move is 0-0-0. I believe that this game deserves to be the second best after Bryne - Fischer game.
