Subject: Novice Nook # 17

This week's article is called "Break Moves: Opening Lines to Increase Mobility". Most of it is devoted to opening breaks but there's a bit at the end concerning middlegame action as well. I've just skimmed it, but, for novices and intermediates, if it gets you thinking about this aspect of the game, that's all to the good.

...Probably explains why the King's Indian defence and the French have been my standard openings for the last several zillion years (though I retain a fondness for the Modern Benoni). For some of the earliest remarks about 'break moves' (though he didn't use the expression) check out Nimzovitch's 'My System'.

break moves

This is a new concept for me. Of course I have previously recognized that from time to time a
move will break open a closed position. But I had not recognized it as a concept nor had I
recognized how certain break moves show up repeatedly. In retrospect the concept seems
obvious, but then that is true with many good ideas.

This is an idea that seems relatively easy to grasp, now as I put it into practice, I will find out
whether it is truly easy, or if it is just one of those things that is easy until you get the hang of it.
