Message: is one of the most intelligent, kindest & well-spoken members at GameKnot. I cannot say with authority, but I believe that the current state of affairs at GameKnot has gone a long way towards alienating & offending some of the very best hearts & minds here, schachfruend among them. I do know that schachfruend was against the closing of the forums, and has expressed displeasure at what seems to be the arbitrary & callous banning of many posters. Several other long-time GK members have expressed their displeasure as well, and have protested these acts by resigning their remaining games, and moved on to more amicable & "member friendly" climes.

Message: or is anyone else getting tired of what seems to be endless protests against the closing of the social forum and the tempory banning of people who break the forum rules. If schachfruend and several other long-time GK members leave the site then I would like to wish them good luck. Perhaps the rest of us can get back to what we came here for to begin with. namely play chess.

Message: I've played some very interesting games with schachfruend and had some unforgetable conversations with her. Everybody who I know who met her enjoyed the meeting. As much as it's possible to build a friendship over the Internet she is a friend of mine. I'm not shure she left GK for the forums problems. I'm not even shure she left GK for any GK problem.
I'm gonna wright her.

What are you DOING in here? You guys say you're here only to "play chess", yet your sort keeps popping into the forums to COMPLAIN about all the "complaining" going on in the forums!
Go.
Get back to what you came here for.

Message: What am I doing here?
I'm reading your little sad tale of woe and suffering and I can't help but wonder why?
Is your message "it's alright to complain but it's not alright to complain about complainers?
or is it "I came to complain and you came to play chess...so you go!"
I reason I come to this forum is to find out what is going on at gameknot but instead I am treated to news about your friends.
After my first post I recieved some personal messages from my friends telling me to expect a number of personal attacks from the site trouble makers and to be prepared.
but you are correct in that my "sort" is very tired of all the complaining that your "sort" does.

Me too - why are you reading it? Someone has a gun to your head forcing you? With your eyelids taped open?
And this;
"I come to this forum to find out what is going on at GameKnot, but instead I am treated to news about your friends."
Really. What you fail to understand is that my friends ARE GameKnot, as well as your friends here, as well as you & I!
I do not understand your complaint - if you don't like reading what's in the forums - then don't. Quite simple really.

sorry, I object to people trying to turn this forum into the "closed" social forums which I never visited because I was not interested in the little games that went on there.
What is going on in this thread and several others in the gameknot forum are insulting to a vast majority of "chess players" here.
It might be a good idea to close all the forums! since so many people refuse to use them as they were intended to be used.

Message: I am sorry if I came accross as sarcastic, it is indeed a sad thing to lose a friend.
I see a big difference between the two of us. I am committed to gameknot as a chess player, I participate in all the chess activities and I am a paying member.
I only visited the social forum only once because I didn't like what I saw there.
I see all of the threads like this one as calculated to cause more strife, and division among the players here.
I think it is wrong to allow people to unjustly criticize the webmaster with out making some comment.
I hope you are not one of those people, If you are then you should follow your own advise and only read comments by people that agree with you.

Message: I became a paying member here almost immediately upon joining. One of the things that attracted me most was the quality of discussion in the forums here. I made many ,many friends - and whiled away many hours in reading and discussing threads here, some serious - some lighthearted. It was the things i read in the forums that inspired me to sponsor several members with paid memberships. I supported this site as well as anyone, and more than most. I do love chess, but chess is not what made GameKnot a unique and special site, nor is it the outstanding quality of the technical features found here. It was, and is, the people that make up the community of GameKnot. These people have been silenced - stifled. It is the ruination of a great site. I know others do not see this, although it seems self evident .

Message: You have a real gift for expressing yourself, when pushed into it! :o) I think I see your position clearly now and I am glad your not one of the destructive people seeking strife and division. My experence here is different from yours. I keep in touch with friends through personal messages and I meet up with my off line friends at a coffee house once or twice a week. From what I have seen, and I don't pretend to have seen everything, most of those people who banned were banned for only a short period of time. I think the webmaster thought it was necessary to keep things from getting out of hand. I've had friends leave the site because they were attacked in the forums unjustly, accused of being cheats, bigots and other things. Then there is the multiple nic thing what a mess that is. The innocent are easily caught but the real abusers seem to continue on business as usual.
GameKnot may not be perfect, but it is a great place to play chess.

Gameknot is a cold and sterile place now with people being banned left, right and centre.

Message: One of my earliest threads was called "baby names". I have six children. The latest of which was born since I became a GK member. The thread "baby names" was posted for idea's from GK members. As we needed a name for our latest daughter. There were many people participating in the thread, with lots of idea's for a new name. The name that my wife and I chose, came from schachfruend (Rose Lee). So she will certainly be missed by myself.

"What is going on in this thread and several others in the gameknot forum are insulting to a vast majority of "chess players" here. "
please explain- I do not understand what you mean. The vast majority do not look at the forums. And why is chess players in quotes? Are chess players so rare that you are one of the lucky few to be in that category?
"It might be a good idea to close all the forums! since so many people refuse to use them as they were intended to be used."

Message: last time I checked there are 93,938 registered user's at this site. People are coming and going on a daily basis. The GameKnot Forum is where they go to look for site news and information. Instead they have to wade through thread after thread of relatively relatively unimformative discussion from a small group people about their friends and how they feel about this or that.
The webmaster gave some very good reasons for closing the social forum it his site and his call. There are plenty of ways and places on the web to go and do all of the things you were doing in the social forum. It just means you'll have to click your mouse a couple of extra times.
These continuing off topic protest are getting on alot of people's nerves. They keep coming in roughfly three ways. The loud sign waving protest shouting slogans etc. the people who really think about it and come up with alternatives like moderators and a disclaimer page etc there is some good stuff here and it is the kind of thing I would expect to find here. Lastly there are the protestors who want to drum up support using human intrest/emotional blackmail, and that is what this thread represents.
Here is an idea you might want to suggest to the webmaster: Private Team Forums they only team members would have access, postings could be run through a filter to remove offensive language and the theam captain and acouple sub-captains could act as moderators. This seems to be working pretty well at some other sites and it would be a great way for people with similar intrest to gather together in friendship without involving everyone on the site. Just a thought.

Message: you say there are 93,938 registered users, but how many of them are active? Only 3,808 of them were even active eneough to participate in the survey! That is over 90,000 people that are MIA!!
The webmaster did not give very good reasons for closing the forums- he used an easy excuse as a way out.
Protests always get on someone's nerves! Look at history there are always different views about different things- you happen to disagree with us here but its not eneough to disagree you have to go to the point of constantly posting and appearing to support what you are against.

Message: People just can't accept the fact the the Social Forums are closed. Let them leave if they want, the site is NOT being mismanaged and it is just fine the way it is.The reason the forums was closed was because people couldn't handle themselves, and it will remain closed. Mike said it several times, we do NOT need a social forum we all have a life outside of gameknot with lots of people to meet. If you do need a social forum online there's a lot you can go to.

Message: What kind of fuzzy logic are you using? You have to answer a survey to be an active member of the site? The webmaster gave very good reasons for closing the social forum, if you had a little more experience more maturity you would be able to consider his side of the issue rather than to dismiss his decision as taking the easy way out.
Evidently its not enough for you and your friends to protest, you have to protest constantly No post goes unanswered you post constantly and criticize me for doing the same?

7/19/2003 21:57:28 [ report this post ] | ok then
Message: 41,588. That is the number of games in progress- less than half the the registered members- also factor in the fact that most if not all GK players play more than one game at a time- and several play over 100 games at a time. So even if the average amount of games for an active GK player was 4 that would mean only 1 out of ever 9 registered players was active!
I have looked at the other side and that is why I think it is the "easy way out". And here again you are disregarding my opinion based on my age- that is very narrow minded.
Lastly- what cause accomplished through protesting was accomplished by a group that protested once was told no and then went away because they were told no?

Message: of "ranked" players at GameKnot is currently 12,000. When I peruse this list at random, I find that about every third account is a "dead" account (no games played within the last 90 days). I suspect the real number of active players at GK is somewhere between 6,000 - 8,000.
I don't know where the 93,938 number comes from, but I suspect it is the total number of people who have ever registered at GK. It does not in any way reflect the reallity of how many active players are here, and is simply posted as a promotional & marketing tool.
