Subject: fast/blitz, part 2
Message: I think that this deserves a second thread.
1st issue: Blitz games would probably be a great strain on the server. Mike has put alot of energy into speeding up the site for future upgrades, but I doubt that it is enough to keep the site running at current speed and maintain a blitz hall.
2nd issue: Do we really want to start competin with the big, blitz only sites like ICC or Worldchessnetwork. Not only can we not compete with them in regards to a blitz server (no offence) but it might not be nice if they decided to in return pursue a correspondance wing; something which they easily have the budget to do.

Message: Although at first I tried other sites, I have only ever really enjoyed playing on Gameknot and now only use this site.
I like Blitz chess and would love to see it incorporated as an option. I play for enjoyment and sometimes I just fancy a quick game.

7/15/2003 12:23:35 [ report this post ] | I would rather see...
Message: Faster time controls introduced to the site... why not allow games to be played with 1D time control, or maybe even hours of time control? Anything less than an hour is too close to real time chess (like ICC or FICS) and I don't want to see that here.
I also think the Fischer Time Controls need to be modified to support concepts like, 12H+0H/12H, which would mean that you have 1 day to complete the game, PERIOD. For tournaments, having something like 30D+0D/30D would allow a games to be completed within a 2 month time period (assuming there weren't any postponements to make it go a little longer).
Anyways, a lot of people would like the opportunity to play faster games. I see no reason not to support that kind of thing, I just don't want to see full blitz real time chess here...

7/15/2003 12:41:29 [ report this post ] | A problem,
Message: If the game was to go for 12 hours, I can't see anyone staying at the computer for that length of time waiting for their opponent to make a move. So that if they left the computer, and the opponent came back and made a move, you might lose a lot of time before you knew your opponent made a move. I could see 3, 4, or 5 hour games, because some people work on the computer for that length of time and would be ready.
I also think that if the blitz option was rated, it should be seperate from the normal rating. That would be a simple way to solve that problem.

Message: I hope that when Mike says blitz, he means there will be the option for time controls such as 30 minutes (generally not considered blitz) -- and more importantly, that there be incremental time, (20/5, 15/10) for example. Meaning, that for every move, 5 or 10 seconds is added to your clock. I find this extremely useful for games that go to complicated endgames.

Message: After a year and a half at GK --and many, many posts-- my first multiple posting has to be so horrific! Horrible! I cringe just scrolling down :( Netscape was acting very, very strange on me...
ON THE TOPIC: doesn't anyone worry that since real-time chess is much more popular than correspondence (seemingly), that the correspondence side of GK will be neglected? I would guess that in the future, most new memberships will be for those playing real time-- thus, Mike's attention will of course gravitate in that direction.
I am afraid that running a real-time chess site will take most of Mike's time and energy... and the other part of GK will just kind of atrophy...
I would vote to keep GK for correspondence chess only, but I think the issue has already been decided (though, I would agree with someone who said that Mike should put the real-time chess at the other site name he owns, chesscolony.com).

Message: before we continue on the discussion of blitz/fast chess we must first decide about the forums. If the forums remain closed then blitz/fast should be out of the picture as well. Check the poll- forums got a better response that blitz/fast chess.
