Subject: Changes to Gameknot
Message: Here are two changes that NEED to be made:
the rule where the rating calculations done upon completion of a game be based on the maximum between the differences at the start and end of the ratings of the players..
is stupid (obviously it should just be the difference between the ratings when the game STARTED)
the rule in leagues where if u finish a game with someone in a higher league.. u gain 2 points if u win.. only lose .5 points if you lose
is stupid..
league scores should always be +1 or -1.. of COURSE when you get into a higher league ur going to have a ton of games going with ppl in the lower league.. and if u happen to lose 1/4 of those.. my score will be below zero if you take into account the score contribution by the completion of my games with the lower league players..
that's ridiculous..

Message: By error upon creation. Unfortunately Gameknot cannot respond, I hate myself, I keep remembering bad things instead of good things and I have difficulty in keeping myself from announcing them.

Message: League scoring was suggested by League participants.
Originally it was +/-1 point for games started agaisnt opponents in same division.
But then League participants decided to change it :)
It did not come from Mike.

Message: I reread my post and couldn't see any mention of Mike in it. Just disatisfaction with the way things are.
Can someone give me a good reason why it's better this way? For every reason you give me I can always give you a couple reasons why all it really does is screw people's league scores up.

7/17/2003 15:48:39 [ report this post ] | Why do you think the rating....
Message: adjustment should obviously be based on the start of the game? US Chess Federation correspondence ratings, for example, are adjusted on the basis of the CURRENT rating of the players involved when the game is COMPLETED (actually when the game is reported and finally looked at by the CC director - so there is no guarantee they are adjusted in the order completed if people take their time reporting in) rather than the rating at the beginning of the game. That makes sense to me - it is a closer reflection of the actual strength of the players involved. However - one can make arguments for a wide variety of systems. I actually think using the rating at the end of the game has advantages - as I believe it is a better indicator of the strengths of the players.

Message: I don't think originally GK had 'maximum of two' ratings, but then people started to manipulate it to avoid drops in rating - especially when you are playing weaker opponent that would cause you 16 points rating drop and some other cases.
I think this current system is done to benefit person who wins - and I would think it is fare because I am soccer fan where you get 3 points for win and only 1 point for lose :).
CHESS IS ABOUT CRUSHING SOMEONES SKULL OVER THE BOARD (and where is edmaster?.. hehehe)

7/17/2003 21:16:56 [ report this post ] | i so agreeeeeeee!!!!
Message: ...with olympio regarding the league games. you started a game with an higher rated player in the same league, you make finaly manage to draw him and you are very proud of it too, but then u figure out he gained a half point for the draw because at the end of the game you either got promoted or he got demoted or both...
we could make endless examples what else could happen, but i think that we all get the right picture anyways...
Also most players, before the promotions/demotions start to move slower because they hoping you/they will get pro-/demoted and they get/lose more/less points. it's a "pointpoker". and if you play it right, you'll find youself in C2 with a lot of games going on started in D3. enough blah blah...
yes i agree, it's UNFAIR, STUPID and RIDICULOUS and the WORST point system i've EVER seen!
Mike, PLEASE fix it for us A.S.A.P.
p.s. to olympio:
after your little bro resigned all those games for you, i'm sure mike would have reset your rating to 1200 for you and you would have been as provisional very fast back up to 2100+

7/26/2003 08:13:09 [ report this post ] | League format
Message: I think the league should have the same format as the tournaments do. The league starts on a particular date. All games start at the same time. Each player plays each of the other players in the league. 2pts for a win 1pt for a draw. When all games are finished the there is a fair idea of who should go up. And who should go down.
Because my boycott, I am not playing at the moment. However when I did. I played and finished games a lot quicker than most. I found myself in a different division each week. Hardly gave me the feeling of league play. I found that I could be playing players, from 3 or 4 different divisions at the same time. Thats not league play. League play is each player in the division plays all others in the same division. The top players gaining promotion. The weaker players get religated.
