Subject: Hiding online status
Message: I would like to know why a lot of people criticise this?
I hide my online status for personal reasons and I believe whoever wants to should be allowed to do so without being belittled for it. I fail to see why that should be inconvenient for the opponents.

Message: This is a turned-based site... there is no requirement for them to make a move as soon as a previous move is made.
As far as what you are saying, my experience is actually the opposite. If I show my online status, and I spend a lot of time on the site (reading the forums is a good example), I get complaints that I am online and not making moves in certain games.
This is exactly why I don't want to show my online status. It take 2 seconds to check GK to see if new posting have been made, read them, and then get back to work. (I remain on the GK page) I would look like I am online for another 10 minutes, but I am actually doing real work during that time. I don't need people complaining to me that I should be making moves instead of reading the forums or doing whatever else I choose on the site.
It takes time to think and make proper moves in a lot of my games... and it takes a lot of thinking power that I just don't have the time to put into games while I am at work. That is just the way it is.
Anyways, I completely agree with people hiding their online status if they so choose.

Message: I like it when people show that they're on line. I'll stay on a little longer thinking they might make a move. When they don't, no big deal. You have the amount of time agreed upon when you took the game to make the move. So if you are going to make the move or not, it lets players know that a move could be coming.

Message: put someone on your ignore list just for hiding their online status?? I usually play with the green dot, but if there are many of my opponents online at the same time I have on occasion hidden my online status. I started to do that after receiving messages from people demanding to know why I was online and not moving fast enough. That kind of behavoir just upsets me and I'll start to concentrate on that instead of my moves. Yes, it is frustrating when you see a player online for days and they don't move in your game, but there is a time limit and you have to respect that.

7/28/2003 14:28:18 [ report this post ] | i don't hide my online status
Message: opponents i see online, get preferred in the games. that means, when i see someone online, i try to make the move in that game first, when all online peeps done, then i take care about the "offline peeps".
i don't expect anyone to move right away, but i think it's rude when you are hiding status, make a couple of moves and then just leave without leaving a note to say bye and the other then waits for 1 hr on your move

7/28/2003 15:40:19 [ report this post ] | Exactly,
Message: ...and online opponents can make many moves among themselves before making one move with an offline opponent - almost simulating a “let’s play head to head for now” scenario until “one of us goes away”. I even have a tendency to move quicker than usual to keep the other player(s) online if I feel like playing. Yes, this is all obvious and this feature works perfectly because it's according to personal preference. Anyone disagreeing with this might want others to concur with their personal preference without realize it. The only time I have a - again, the key phrase is - “personal preference” for hiding my status is when I am at work. This is not to say I’m plan to cheat my employer, but sometimes at lunch or as a quick break, I’ll come here to “make a quick move - or two”. And since I introduced some colleagues and supervisors to GameKnot, I don’t need certain people to see me online or see my online status to display “last seen here 5 minutes ago”.

7/29/2003 09:43:41 [ report this post ] | I can't say I really
Message: see any justification for hiding online status. I really find it annoying. It causes more inconvenience then convenience.
The only benefit is ppl don't message you and ask you to move..
However.. I've never had someone message me asking me to move.
And that means it can't be that big of a problem. Cause I am playing about 120 games usually with about 20 people online at a time.. waiting for me to move.. and sometimes I ignore them and only attend to people who aren't even online.
In that great pool of possible whiners not one person whined to me.
That doesn'tm ean it doesn't happen but it suggests it doesn't happen enough to really make it worthwhile to hide ur status. If someone insists you move you just have to tell them to play more games.. or if they are unregistered and limited.. maybe they should pay.
I don't like saying "freeloaders" have less rights to complain than paying members, but this is one case where that is true. They can't whine about us not moving fast and limiting the amount of games they can play because we've paid and have the right to play as many games as we like and in so doing often get to the point where we're playing enough at once that we can't attend to them at a moment's notice.
So this in my mind eliminates any real justification for hiding online status.
And since I play so many games at once.. I always haev plenty of moves.. so why would I care whether people hide their status or not? I don't really care that much.. this is just my opinion.
