2/26/2004 08:30:12 [ report this post ] | Unintended log-offs thoughts...
Message: Hi Brokenwood. I'm not a computer whiz. But before mentioning the couple thoughts I do have, to say first; to help them to help you, who Are Savvy...you may want to describe a bit more fully what actually happens when the "log-off" occurs. EG, do you have: A)A complete crash completely off GK, Out of your Browser, Off of your Server, Out of your Server'sware, Out of Windows, And Reboot Required ?! Or B)maybe just part of all that? C)Any msg's or warning involved ? D) While on any particular task or page at GK? (For me, it is most often after typing a Personal Msg and hitting the Send that it has happened).
....
First thought, being from UK, you aren't AOL like me.There's a Plus! Something they do to me...'sneak' software downloads onto me, while I'm on www. That or some other Input from the server can put me off GK. Maybe just off GK back to server. Sometimes goes "non-reponding" & freeze, needing reboot. More commonly get some msg like "Illegal function performed, program will be closed". And only lets me choose "ok close"(Ignore never works on mine)& so they make me knock myself off, clear off server & needing to reload the Serverware. Or reboot. At times what- ever they try adding makes too many active Programs & crashes me.[I run up to 11 before they tinker, unless I remember to turn-off some coming on at Boot.]
......Times I've been put off GK AND offline, with no warning whatsoever...but the
Serverware and Windows are still running Okay. The culprit turns out to be modem connection. Once had to replace the phoneline cord due to a loosening connector, and solved it. Or sometimes if anything has pulled the cord too tight, or it gets a heavy weight set upon it, or in some kind of bind like tight & sharp turn around some corner, that can actually cause a bad connection or disconnect. Strange, but I've seen it happen at work too, not just on my own PC.
.....IF there is trouble with your access phone #, it will put you off with no warning
just the same. And often repeatedly. Don't know if they get overcrowded or what. That seems like it is more likely happening to me at certain times of day.
......One more thing I notice. Have to Disk Cleanup & Delete Temporary Internet Pages from memory every so often, especially after Blitz games, else that portion of my Computer Memory (whatever its called) becomes overfiull & runs out of room to continue. May get msg like "Memory capacity becoming dangerously low" before it will actually put you offline. But the msg does not seem to come every time?!
An annecdote, that once amused me.....
.....In Desperation: One time my Dedicated Novag Board broke down & all the lights came on and it froze up totally. Talked to a mainframe repairman at work. Said if I could write the Co. and get him a copy of the wiring schematics, he Might be able to get it going again. But before that could happened, one of the Stockbrokers heard about it and told me not to worry. "Just take that little panel off the back of it, when its turned on; then when you see that big-thing inside, you just go and knock on that a few times with your knuckle. That should take care of it." Sure
enough, it did . [8-D} I'm not sure if the Moral should be: "Mind your Broker" or
to remember the Classic-American-Repair is "If its broke, pound on it ?!".
......So, I hope you hear from someone more knowing than me, like my stockbroker maybe.....{8-) {maybe Mike or Loreta or Bogg or Drexel, the Whizzes I can recall.}
Good Luck on it ! Craig A.C.

2/26/2004 11:57:47 [ report this post ] | re:logging on probs
Message: Thanks for the reply Craig. Nothing crashes, but What happens is this. All too often it takes me several times to log on to GK. After several attempts I eventually succeed, but when I attempt to access any one of the games I am playing, next to the statement white/black to move, in brackets in red text appears the words "click here to log on" and of course I have to go through the often abortive log on procedure again. This happens all to frequently to be funny and I have not been able to discern a pattern in order to correct it. I have to say your suggestion of the lump hammer remedy is looking increasingly attractive. Anyone else experience this malfunction?

Message: So no need to correct it. Just repeating.
I didn't know what you meant at all when you started talking about Log-on screen, because I Never Log-on. Or even see the log-on screen. Had to figure out how to go find it to see what you were saying. I wonder if I'm soing something wrong then...but I don't have the problem, so maybe ignorance really IS Bliss!
I just drop into to site, to my Games page usually, at http//Gameknot.com/list_games.pl
Have you tried that? Or maybe that gives you MY game Page huh??! Hey, if so, please don't blunder. I like to so my own. 8-) regards.

2/27/2004 19:57:29 [ report this post ] | IE6
Message: This really sounds like a cookies problem because the site is not recognizing your computer, therefore it continues to ask for your identity. Try this:
tools>internet options>privacy>edit>address for website and enter gameknot.com and then click on Allows Allow and then OK.
This should tell IE to override all automatic cookie handling and to accept Gameknot. If that don't work you may have to "repair" Internet Explorer.

Message: Tried your solution Craig and thanks, bad news is no change, good news however, I couldn't access your game page. Thanks also Bob, had already tried that also. I am somewhat computer illiterate so forgive my ignorance, but can you explain what do you mean by "repair" IE> As far as I know GK is the only site on my computer that is affected.

Message: To best use the site you must have your security features set on Medium, not on High. Mine are medium. I havent played with them for awhile, so I think that is refering to security of IE, but wouldnt swear on it.

Message: I also had some XP updates that I hadn't installed. Yes there is an integral firewall with XP. My problem is I was pretty familiar with W98, but the features built into Xp are providing a whole new curve to learn. All seems OK at the mo though.

2/29/2004 12:40:32 [ report this post ] | oh antivirus ok.
Message: Good ridance to my av program them . I had that aol McAfee. It was coinstantly crashing me, trying to add a new program right in the middle of blitz games. I'd wonder why i got some piece frozen and bad response time and whatever. Then something would pop up saying 'ok done loading update, would you like to go back to what you were doing !!!? "Well AV, I really didnt want you screwing up what I was doing in the first place!"
Also still goofed until I canceleed it and gutted every file out of my system then not only that, had to reinstall my aol ware because it had apparently written right into it becaus e it would still come up after the gutting. I said "hey this reminds me of getting a virus, only worse! I'm Paying to have this done to me!" So long Mc.
Never again.

Message: i wouldn't get rid of the entire av if i was you. maybe you'd better put some time in understanding how to configure it in a way you won't have problems with it.
otherwise you might turn out even worse if you got infected in some way.
but maybe an other av program would solve things for you as well:)
