Subject: how to deal with team ranking?

Message:
I just had a look at the team table to find out how to deal with team new ranking, I didnt. it cannot be the score, as it was before, because it looks like a chaotical mix up. so what should be done instead of winning as much games as possible? should a team, to climb the table, play against other teams with a certain rating? the majority of captains voted for that system, so there is surely someone who can explain the advantages of that system.

In my opinion this "system" should be changed as fast as possible, it looks unfair, cryptical and nonsensical to me! but, as I wrote before, I am open for other comments.

team ranking

Message:
Hi Gothicgirl,

I cannot explain the advantages because I agree with you that the new system is bad. I just want to mention that you can see what the ranking is under the "old" system by clicking on the little arrow above the score column. The teams will be rearranged so that they are in order of score. I'm increasingly convinced that, like so many things on the internet, the ranking issue is more perception than reality. If a team likes the old system better, they can return to it with one click, and "voila"!

revote

Message:
IT was a plurality of votes for the new system because there were 3 options. A recall election with only 2 options?

I have asked numerous times both puiblicly and in PM's for a revote, that allows all team members to vote. Mike thinks that 91 people can make the decision for over 2,500 team players.

Second The Motion . . .

Message:
Coyotefan, I read nearly all of your highly interesting and thought provoking posts and I must tell you that I was one of the few captains that advocated that the voting should be open to all team players in good standing, and not just limited to the captains. Team players have as much at stake in the future of team play as the captains, if not even more. And, when the vote came, I was also in the minority by voting for "some other system," rejecting both the team Elo rankings and the point standings. The simple fact remains that the fairest ranking system would be a percentage system, just like most professional sports teams use, i.e. the percentage of wins to the sum of wins and losses, ignoring draws. It would be fair to large teams; it would be fair to small teams. It would be fair to new teams; it would be fair to older teams. It would be fair to all teams. It would truly reflect a team's past performance in terms of winning percentages and all teams would be ranked by the exact same simple method. There could be no complaining, no griping. Percentages do not lie. What still amazes me to no end is the vast numbers of team captains who can't see this simple and irrefutable logic.

Message:
Agree with fliszt! One additional item. The wins/loss/percentage should be over a particular time period (say the last 15 months). Older wins and losses should drop from consideration as they age.

I agree

Message:
But would like to add one very important point to fliszt's concept, true that professional sports teams use the percentage system but they also have "playoffs" at the end of a season.

Second The Motion (con't)

Message:
Well, I think what you would want to do would be to start anew with each new year. In other words on January 1 all teams would be reset to 0-0-0 (.000) for that year. Games in progress on January 1 would start the new year, or new chess season, or chess year, or what have you. That way the team that is number 1 at midnight on December 31 could be crowned the champion of that year. Then there would be a second place finisher, third place and so on. In order to prohibit teams from entering near the end of the year and finishing in a top spot by playing very few games you would set a minumum number of completed team games to be ranked, I'd say around a hundred would do. Also this would give the teams crown jewels to be displayed. For example, a team could say "we were the 2006 Team Champion," or "we finished in Third Place in 2007," etc. As it is now there is no end to the competition. Who ever heard of a game, a match, a season, a sport, a league, a competition of any type that has no end to it?

to fliszt (and others as well)

Message:
I agree with you 100%. It's a pity we already discussed this in the two threads I started some time ago and now we have to agree again in this thread. Perhaps we should ask Mike to give us (not only the teamcaptains, all teammembers) a revote with the next options:

1.
The old point system

2.
The ELO system

3.
Percentage system with a given period of time (let's say 12 months so we can have a champion every year). The minimum number of games played by a team must be discussed but I guess the 100 you mentioned is a good minimum.

4. (perhaps)
Percentage system with no time period

Mike is totally ignoring us. As I stated a few times before. I have PM'ed him at least three times, as well as all the threads on this subject. Mike let the gang of 91 ruin team play. Now he in hiding.

My thought is that with the new system, there will be less games played, therefore, less stress on the server. This is Mikes goal.

Mike, if this is not true, please answer. We all know you do read the forums, plus I have reported this post for you to review.

Mike, please respond!!

Once again, I have nothing to add to what I said before. There was a poll. Every team captain had a chance to vote. Majority voted for Elo rating. Not old system, not something else, but Elo rating. As far as I'm concerned, case is closed. There's no need to start any more polls and waste everyone's time with more discussions. Your energy and your time would be much better spent winning more games for your team. Please, let's move on.

I'm closing this thread for new posts.
